General Summary of Position

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Risk Management for MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) provides strategic direction and leadership for all risk management services for MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The AVP is responsible for the design, implementation, staff leadership, and development of risk management services, and collaborates with senior leadership to develop new and expanding programs that support MedStar Health's risk management strategies. The AVP has overall responsibility for the operational, financial, programmatic, and personnel activities for the MedStar Washington Hospital Center's Risk Management department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct risk management matters that impact the strategic vision and direction of the MWHC Risk Management program including risk identification, setting risk parameters, and creating systems to address risk and direct and manage the program's daily operations, budgeting, fiscal management, and claims management, while also ensuring alignment with MedStar Health's strategic goals and objectives. Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, oversee risk financing claims administration and loss control and serve as the programmatic and operational leader of the MWHC department. Responsible for prevention and mitigation of loss across MedStar Washington Hospital Center's operations. Oversee and lead processes to identify key strategic, financial, operational, and reputational risks, and develops risk mitigation plans for those risks.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for leadership executives and Boards on the state of risk issues and topics.
  • Promote a risk-aware culture, fostering an environment where risk identification and reporting are encouraged and valued by all team members.
  • Work collaboratively with system, regional and hospital leadership to develop and successfully continue programs to enhance a culture that supports patient safety, mitigates risks of safety events, and supports the provision of safe, quality patient care.
  • Participate in the orientation of new employees to introduce risk management philosophies, programs, education and training.
  • Assess, develop, implement, and maintain educational risk management programs for all personnel, leaders, and the Executive Team on identified issues and related activities.
  • With System claims managers (AVPs, Medical Professional Liability Claims), develop claims handling strategies and oversee the MWHC claim's management program, including working and interacting with System claims managers and defense counsel, oversee investigations of adverse occurrences and claims, and evaluating any event that could result in a claim. Engage in all phases of discovery and attend mediations, depositions, and trials as necessary.
  • Direct the development and implementation of staff education and training programs related to risk management processes and objectives.
  • Ensure all risk management activities, including the internal event reporting system and patient grievance process, are in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Provide consultative services to hospital administration, other employees, and physicians on Risk Management, legal and ethical issues, including off-hour and holiday coverage as needed.
  • Selects, trains, orients, and assigns department staff. Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Jurisprudence doctorate required
  • Bachelor's degree Nursing preferred
  • Experience

  • 10 years In healthcare risk management, healthcare, and legal required
  • Licenses and Certifications

  • CPHRM - Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Managementpreferred
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of risks and insurance functions in a large, complex hospital setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of Risk Management risk financing, and self-insurance.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and case law as related to hospital administration and risk management.
  • Ability to understand and manage diverse types of risk and appreciate the strategic goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Ability to interpret the risk climate, both internal and external to the organization.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to build consensus and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and multiple projects and demands.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others and deal with a wide range of executive, administrative, medical, professional, and clerical personnel.
  • This position has a hiring range of $184,900 - $250,100
