General Summary of Position
Participates in and facilitates the clinical operations, human resources, communications, and fiscal activities of the Transplant surgical practices at the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviews, develops and implements a plan to improve patient flow through the Transplant surgery clinics to facilitate clinical efficiency, physician efficiency, patient satisfaction and department productivity.
- In conjunction with the Administrator, performs designated personnel management functions to include interviewing, hiring, orienting new clinical staff and coaching / mentoring and counseling existing staff. Maintains personnel files for the staff to ensure compliance with Licensure and employee health requirements in addition to annual competencies for the clinical staff. Performs clinical staff annual reviews and presents them to the administrator and Site Chiefs for review. Will participate with the Ambulatory Care Administrator in formal discipline situations including terminations.
- Directs and oversees clinical personnel in accordance with clinic, governmental, and other regulatory standards. Develops weekly clinical schedule and makes daily clinical assignments.
- Represents the Department nursing and ancillary staff in the appropriate hospital committees and meetings. Interfaces with MedStar Hospital Administration in order to represent and keep the clinical staff informed of hospital issues, voice concerns, and develop an awareness of the activities of the Transplant service lines.
- Ensures that the clinic is in compliance with JCAHO and DCRA standards and maintains those standards on a daily basis. Monitors and ensures that all professional, regulatory and organizational standards are met.
- Directs and coordinates all functions and activities related to the clinical operations of the clinics on a daily basis. Performs quality control functions. Performs regular equipment checks (such as code carts, refrigerator logs, and the monitoring of oxygen tanks). Responsible for drug and quality assurance checks to ensure CYAS is within acceptable standards.
- Evaluates, investigates and implements methods to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the daily operations of the Transplant department to increase customer satisfaction and department productivity.
- Engages in new clinical trial startup procedures : learn protocols; participates in initiation visits; prepares study approval paperwork, etc. Screens and enrolls study participants. Supervises study participants' movement through the clinical trial protocol. Assists in the collection of data, and monitors study participants' health status.
- Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards. Observes, records, and reports patients' condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Documentation is complete, accurate, and legible. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests. Prepares equipment and aids physicians during treatment, examination, and testing of patients. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information.
- Performs patient telephone triage, assesses needs, and coordinates needs with medical staff as needed
- Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
- Meets regularly with department leaders to ensure the efficient and effective daily operations of the clinics.
- Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards. Observes, records, and reports patients condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Documentation is complete, accurate, and legible. - Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. In conjunction with the Administrator develops and supports continuing education opportunities for nursing staff. Maintains own clinical expertise by attending in-service programs.
- Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
