Job Description
The Assistant Veterans Service Officer is responsible for assisting and supporting veterans and their beneficiaries by identifying community services and resources, providing specialized information regarding clients' needs, and by educating veterans on available benefits. Responsibilities may include providing information to participants; reviewing information; interviewing participants; maintaining and coordinating the collection; and maintenance of related files.
Job Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assists the Veterans Service Officer in the operations of the Veterans’ Service Office.
Assists veterans and beneficiaries by providing information related to programs, community services, and resources, assisting veterans and beneficiaries with completing applications and claims, coordinating the operations of van drivers and coordinating with internal and external agencies to facilitate program operations, providing program information in person or via the telephone or online systems, and preparing and maintaining departmental files, records, forms, and other correspondence and documentation.
Enters, updates, researches, reviews, and compiles information to prepare and maintain reports, veterans case records, social histories, forms, files, applications, and other documentation; provides user assistance related to and maintains databases and online systems; and ensures informational accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures including, but not limited to, the Data Practices Act, HIPAA, and other applicable requirements.
Assists with providing resources to veterans relating to help with chemical dependency, mental health, PTSD, and other issues.
Assists with brainstorming creative methods of outreach for the Veterans Service Office and participates in events to provide outreach and awareness to the community
Prepares requests for annual funding and presents requests to the Veterans Service Officer for approval; assists in drafting and preparing applications for periodic grants through various County, State, and Federal programs for special projects or equipment.
Participates in required training and certifications, attends workshops, seminars, and conferences and confers with professionals to maintain accreditations, credentialing, and current knowledge of all County, State, and Federal statutes, rules, and regulations regarding veterans programs.
Coordinates with internal and external staff, departments, and/or agencies to testify in court, document violations, provide technical assistance to program participants, ensure compliance with program or regulatory requirements, and/or facilitate related departmental operations.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years administrative support or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class typically require:
Honorable military service discharge status required upon hire as defined in Minnesota Statute 197.447.
Must maintain State of Minnesota County Veterans Service Office (CVSO) certification
Valid Minnesota Driver’s License

Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.

2025 Salary Information: Grade level OB23 $25.00 - $33.59
