Job Description

The Deputy Sheriff (Patrol) is responsible for conducting law enforcement activities to ensure public safety. Responsibilities may include responding to requests for assistance from the public; deterring violators; investigating accidents and criminal incidents; preparing incident reports; ensuring the security and order of the court; and receiving processing recording storing maintaining and releasing evidence; protecting crime scenes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Patrols an assigned area to pro-actively enforce local ordinances and State laws; protects people and property through crime prevention techniques and enforcement; provides traffic control; conducts building searches and tracks suspects; and performs building and property security checks.

2. Responds to calls for service; enforcement; vehicle and non-vehicle accidents; medical assistance; or safety; collects information; assists with medical emergencies; determines if a violation of the law has occurred and determines need for further action.

3. Conducts initial investigations regarding complaints; protects crime scenes; questions individuals involved in incidents; gathers information; receives; processes; records; stores; and maintains; evidence; determines laws; regulations; or rules violated; apprehends criminals and offenders; prepares information and documentation for trial; and testifies credibly and truthfully in court.

4. Assists the public with various safety and convenience services to include unlocking vehicles; animal complaints; providing directions; answering general questions; providing safety advice/resources; warning of unsafe/dangerous areas; and mediating civil situations.

5. Prepares and maintains incident reports; records; and other documentation; completes basic operational reports.

6. Assists in controlling inmate population; transports inmates; and provides courtroom security.

7. Performs duties related to the execution of court orders and legal process service.

8. Uses lawful and authorized force to control and arrest those subject to legal detention.

9. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned or as it becomes apparent in carrying out other responsibilities.

9. Ability and knowledge to operate law enforcement equipment with logic and caution.

10. Ability to use computer; recorder; camera equipment; firearms and electronic equipment.

11. Ability to lawfully and competently possess a firearm.

12. Ability to provide credible and truthful testimony.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE



Associate's degree or two-year technical certificate in Law Enforcement or related field.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Active Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) License (or ability to activate upon hire);

Valid MN Class D driver’s license;

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification preferred.


KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical apprehension; handcuffing; and restraining techniques;
  • Legal operation of motor vehicles;

  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment;
  • Modern office technology.


SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Applying law enforcement principles and practices;
  • Utilizing a variety of law enforcement weapons and equipment competently; logically and safely;
  • Applying applicable Federal; State; and local laws; rules; and regulations in a fair and impartial manner;
  • Maintaining records and preparing reports;
  • Compilation and analysis of facts and evidence to make valid civil and criminal recommendations;
  • Presenting and attending training sessions regarding public safety; legal principles; procedures; operations; and enforcement;
  • Using computers and related software applications;
  • Providing customer service;
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers; supervisors; the general public and others to sufficiently and accurately exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Exercise rational judgement;
  • Lawfully and competently possess a firearm;
  • Provide credible and truthful testimony;
  • Deal with situations and people effectively and professionally in stressful situations;
  • Work independently of direct supervision;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Positions in this class typically require: climbing; crouching; reaching; standing; walking; pushing; pulling; lifting; fingering; grasping; feeling; talking; hearing; seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally including rare occasion of up to 200 pounds with assistance of co-workers; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous materials; such as chemicals; blood; and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; and other adverse environmental conditions; such as; challenging behaviors; imminent danger; and threatening environments; incumbents may also be expected to travel to external locations/organizations.

Must maintain good physical; mental and emotional fitness.
