SUMMARY
The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse is responsible for managing the care for the pediatric, adult and elderly patient experience, general medical condition, general surgical procedures, orthopedic surgeries, and post trauma patients which require general assessments related to specific conditions, general therapies and interventions, using nursing process throughout her/his shift. The Medical Surgical RN is responsible to the Inpatient Manager for assigned Medical Surgical Department. The Medical Surgical RN is responsible for meeting the established standard of nursing practice for all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment on the unit. Will delegate, supervise and assist in care provided by LPN’s, PCA’s, and CNA’s. The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse will be cross trained to the Behavior Health Unit during orientation to Medical Surgical Department and expected to float during Low Census Days or as determined by the needs of Meeker Memorial Hospital. In addition, the Medical Surgical RN will be trained to telemetry monitoring within 6 months of orientation, and post-partum and nursery within 6 months to 1 year after orientation. The Medical Surgical RN will train to either Labor and Delivery or ICU after 6 months to 1 year after orientation as determined by the needs of the department and clinical abilities of the nurse as determined by the Director of Staff Development, Inpatient Manager and CNO.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises CNA/PCA positions in the Department for day-to-day operations. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduated of an accredited school of nursing
- Current licensure in good standing in the state of practice
- Evidence of BLS credential Mandatory
- Additionally, the RN may have professional certifications, including but not limited to RNBC-MS, RNBC-GERI, RNC-MS, RNC-GERI, OCN, ONC, CURN, CPRN, CPDN, CNN, ACRN, CGRN, CHN, or CPDN.
- Evidence of NRP credential Mandatory within 6 months to 1 year after completion of orientation.
- Additionally, the RN may be required to credential in ACLS within 1-2 years of hire.
- Effective January 2024, an online trauma training course will be assigned and required for those who do not have TNCC certification.
Job Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- In collaboration with the health care team, RN will provide the highest quality nursing care and experience for all assigned patients.
- Delivers professional nursing care to patients within the hospital, using established Standards of Nursing Practice and RN Scope of Practice.
- Conducts and individualized patient preschool assessment of physiological, psychological, social, personal needs of patients. Prioritizing the data collection based on the infant, toddler, school age, adolescent, adult, and elderly patient’s immediate condition or needs within timeframe specified by policies, procedures, or protocols.
- Conducts ongoing assessments as determined by the patient’s condition and/or hospital policies, procedures, or protocols.
- Develops plan of care that is individualized for the patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
- Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by the physician in an accurate and timely manner.
- Performs therapeutic nursing interventions as established by individualized plan of care for the patient and his/her family.
- Provides individualized patient/family education customized to the patient and his/her family using Teach-Back Method.
- Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress towards problem resolution and patient goals.
- Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to pediatric and adult resuscitation protocols.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, and family.
- Provides care in non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to age appropriate, and patient and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
- Reports patient condition to provider and health care team as appropriate during each shift.
- Maintains competency in medical surgical nursing for all ages determined by the Director of Staff Development, Inpatient Manager and CNO.
PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Peruse continuing educational experience consistent with requirements of Minnesota State Board of Nursing. Maintains and updates professional skills and knowledge related to area of responsibility.
- Practices professional nursing according to established standards of nursing practice, and demonstrate the ability to apply scientific principles to problem solving through the nursing process.
- Ability to organize and time management to complete work, perform a variety of duties, communicate and work effectively with others, and assume a transformational leader role in the unit.
- Conduct your behavior accordance with the Commitment to Excellence signed upon hire.
- Beware of nursing ethics, and practice nursing in accordance with sound ethical standards.
- React appropriately in emergency situations, demonstrate CPR at least annually.
- Exhibit professionalism through grooming and appearance, as well as punctuality and reliability.
- Reports observations of nursing practice to the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse on timely basis.

- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.

2. Computer/Electronic Device Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Emergency Preparedness Websites/MNTraInternet software; Order entry in EMR Order processing systems and EMR Word Processing software; Familiar and proficient with computers. Understanding of how to use Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer, Google, Excel Spreadsheet software, Word processing Software. Cell Phones. Fax Machines.
