What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grinder Operator position at Melling Tool Co?
SUMMARY
Grinder operates grinding machines to assemble products and product parts to established blueprint and engineering specifications. Selects, mounts, attaches and calibrates a variety of attachments to grind angles, contours, lines, spheres, etc. on to surfaces.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Grind external or internal cylindrical tapered surfaces
- Remove metal by the application of abrasives which are bonded to form a rotating wheel
- Rough and finish flat, cylindrical, and conical surfaces
- Read and interpret charts, drawings, and blueprints
- Determine product specifications such as dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be ground
- Collect and assemble required products
- Determine grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures, and grinding wheels to be used
- Mount grinding wheel
- Dress wheel according to specifications
- Use dressing devices
- Position work rest to specified height
- Lift or hoist work pieces
- Confirm ground work piece has the correct specifications
- Change worn grinding wheels
- Check grinding wheels for cracks
- Utilize micrometers, calipers, and preset gauges
- Set up automatic work-feeding device
- Use proper wheel guards on all grinding machines
- Grind nonmetallic materials
- Observe machine during operation
- Knowledgeable of and supports Human Resource, Quality and Safety/Environmental policies & practices. Strives for continuous improvement in their area of expertise and job function that results in better cost, quality, or functionality of the products we deliver to our customers
- Promote good employee relations and high morale

LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- No supervisory responsibilities
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- One (1) to Two (2) years’ experience as a Machine Operator
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Ability to Read Blueprints, Schematics and Manuals
- Mechanically inclined
- Set up experience, preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Work in a manufacturing environment
- Exposure to heat, loud noise, dust, odors, dirt/dust and fumes
- Frequently stand, walk, push, pull, reach, and grasp
- Frequently lift and lower up to 50 pounds. Assistance is required when lifting over 50 pounds
- Frequently carry up to 50 pounds. Assistance is required when lifting over 50 pounds
