What are the responsibilities and job description for the MANAGER GREENHOUSE OPERATIONS position at Melwood Horticultural Training Center Inc.?
INTRODUCTION
The Manager, Greenhouse Operations is responsible for coordinating the day to day operations of the Greenhouses. The Manger, Greenhouse Operations will provide assistance with plant care and maintenance for all plant material grown as part of Melwood’s Horticulture Programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Implement day-to-day operations of the greenhouses and staff. Ensure that quality, safe and efficient operations are maintained.
2. Responsible for proper horticultural methods of growing, plant care and researching of new plant materials. This includes but is not limited to implementing an Integrated Pest Management Program, watering, fertilization, transplanting, soil preparation, seasonal displays and crop records. May be required to perform the application of pesticides when necessary.
3. Develop and coordinate community, government, and professional sales contacts. Attend and coordinate specific plant sales throughout the year. Maintain records and database of contacts and referral sources.
4. Responsible for maintaining the greenhouses and keeping them in proper working order. Review security markings, care and proper use of supplies/equipment, as part of the regularly scheduled inspection process.
5. Responsible for the development of new opportunities and programs that expand Melwood’s horticulture business.
6. Ensure efficient and effective business practices are used in the production of plant material and in the wholesale and retail sales of the product.
7. Review equipment and purchasing invoices delivered on site to ensure accuracy of shipment and charges; making any necessary changes.
8. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of plants and ensure sales and any product losses are tracked.
9. Responsible for identifying any product problems and working to correct these problems prior to damaging the product.
10. Works with assigned people with differing abilities to train them on work in the horticulture industry.
11. Assists in preparing for and ensuring adequate staff for all garden center sales and outreach events.
12. Creates and maintains a routine maintenance schedule for all greenhouse operations.
13. Ensure proper care of the greenhouses and watering of the plants during weekends and holidays.
14. Attend required meetings and trainings on the care and maintenance of greenhouse production.
15. Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The incumbent will supervise greenhouse worker/trainees and any other staff members responsible for the growing plants.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to stand 90% of the work time and sit 10%, must be able to lift and/or carry 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50 pounds. Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel and reach in order to perform work in the greenhouse setting. Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors’ in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field required. One year work experience in greenhouse operations. Prior work experience with people with disabilities or behavioral issues preferred. Must have good driving record and valid driver's license.
