Job Summary
The Safety Manager serves as the local safety expert and is responsible for leading and innovating the safety program to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. The Safety Manager is highly self-directed and exercises good judgement calls. The Safety Manager ensures safe practices are in place at all levels and develops internal safety resources. This position partners closely with Superintendent(s), Production Manager(s), clients, third parties and other business units.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Safety Duties:
Accident Prevention
- Plans and executes MEMCO safety initiatives to ensure a safe, healthy, and incident-free workplace
- Partners with customers and responds to request for site safety inspections
- Partners with shared services (safety/risk) teams on companywide initiatives
- Reviews safety trends and develops safety goals
- Ensures safety initiatives are followed and executed
Safety Documentation
- Reviews and signs-off on safety reports
- Develops site specific safety plans
- Conducts safety audits of jobsites and facilities as required
- Maintains accurate safety records in accordance with company guidelines
- Ensures HAZCOM program and material safety data sheets (SDS) are maintained, updated and readily accessible
- Partners with risk management to manage local worker’s compensation claims process
- Maintains an understanding of owner controlled (OCIP) and contractor controlled (CCIP) insurance programs and how this influences safety regulations on project sites
Incident Management
- Tracks and monitors safety violations and evaluates preventative measures taken
- Investigates escalated safety accidents to determine causes and manage accident response process
Lead
- Grows and develops safety professionals around safety processes, procedures, concerns and career development
- Partners with production leadership to lead safety culture
- Analyzes safety training needs and acts as subject matter expert
- Partners with Human Resources related to compliance and employee issues
- Partners with Craft Talent related to training and development to promote safe work practices
- Sets branch safety goals and leads local safety committee to achieve
General Duties:
- Participates in local industry associations and customer safety committees to capture and share best practices
- Able to work different work schedules in varying location as needed
- Perform other job duties as assigned
Job Qualifications
Education:
- High School diploma, diploma in skilled trade, or equivalent work experience
- OSHA 500 certification
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Maintains CEU
Experience:
- 5-7 years’ experience in a safety leadership position, construction supervisor or equivalent position
- In depth knowledge of construction procedures, equipment, and safety, health and environmental risks, legislation, and procedures
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Advanced knowledge of safety regulations and company policies
- Advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and or practices
- Familiar with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
- Ability to lead and teach a team
- Ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Working conditions
Work will be conducted indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions and temperatures such as inclement weather, heat, humidity, and cold. On a regular basis there will a possible exposure to the following: chemicals, dust, fumes, fiberglass insulation, and other airborne particles from construction equipment, vibrations from construction equipment, and typical construction noise that may exceed normal decibel levels.
Travel to and from jobsites as required for the position.
Ability to be on-call and available as required for project needs including after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
Physical requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. with regularity and ability to guide, set-up, and support specialized equipment, tools, or materials that could weigh up to 100 lbs.
- Required to sit, stand, and/or walk for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to perform full range of body movements including use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, and equipment
- Ability to balance, bend, reach, stretch, crouch, crawl, kneel and/or climb ladders and/or stairs
- Ability to perform repetitive movements and/or tasks with few breaks
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment not limited to but including safety glasses, steel toe footwear and any other as deemed required or necessary.
