JOB SUMMARY
The Public Safety Officer is a professional uniformed, first responder position within the Office of Public Safety that provides emergency, public safety, physical security, and protection and preparedness services to the Memorial Healthcare Center (MHC) organization, under the direction of the Manager of Public Safety. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. Recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Employs a variety of proactive patrol techniques and strategies to ensure the safety and security of all MHC affiliated persons, property, and assets. Acts as a key facilitator in promoting the department’s client-centered public safety approach. Engages in formalized community oriented problem-solving and crime prevention measures whenever possible. Utilizes self-initiated collaborative partnerships to identify and reduce MHC’s exposure to internal and external risks and threats.
- Provides a visible deterrence to crime, prohibited activities, or suspicious activities in public and non-public areas which may include but are not limited to areas such as the main campus, outlying buildings, grounds, parking areas, stairways, tunnels, mechanical areas, or patient treatment areas.
- Ability to physically intervene during crises. This includes the functional ability to physically restrain people, requiring retention of trained knowledge under stress as well as the ability to meet significant physical demands including those of a struggle with someone physically larger and heavier, while making all possible efforts not to inflict injury. It includes the ability to continue to request or direct compliance from people while they are being restrained.
- Responds quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations. Verbally and / or physically intervenes during crisis. This includes the functional ability to quickly grasp various situations, develop rapport with emotionally disturbed people, and understand when people are or are not processing information, and be supportive or directive as needed.
- Decisively responds to assigned calls for service, emergent situations, and critical incidents occurring during shift. Employs the Incident Command System (ICS) when addressing developing events. Conducts an initial assessment of the incident, determining appropriate course of action, and remedies the situation in accordance with established training / standards.
- Upon assignment, leads and / or provides support for investigations. Applies specialized skills and training in collecting evidence, conducting interviews, managing cases, performing surveillance, securing crime scenes, as well as other related investigative functions.
- Acts as a first responder to all fire and life safety incidents. Provides initial assessment of situation and makes determination of appropriate response. Initiates ICS protocols, and acts as interim Incident Commander until situation is resolved and / or released from duty. In accordance with MHC policy, implements containment and suppression actions, search / rescue measures, and evacuation protocols as necessary. Secures affected area pending the arrival of emergency services and controls access until relieved. Makes notifications to appropriate individuals. Files complete and accurate incident reports.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
