Job Summary :

Perform Ultrasound procedures at a technical level sufficient to provide adequate diagnosis with limited supervision and in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures on patients ranging in age from pediatric to geriatric. Establishes and maintains quality control procedures for the Ultrasound department. Actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, behaves in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pipeline Health, upholding standards of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) patient communication.

Essential Functions :

  • Demonstrates the safe and proper use of the Ultrasound Unit and ancillary equipment.
  • Demonstrates and understanding of radiographic processing, processing artifacts and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the growth and development process as it relates to ultrasound.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of clinical information related to the Ultrasound procedures.
  • Responsible for performing exams in the following modalities : Diagnostic and / or vascular ultrasound.
  • Adjusts and manipulates imaging equipment to produce images that meet departmental standards.
  • Demonstrates the ability to correctly image and identify anatomical structures as it relates to diagnostic imaging and uses proper patient positioning. Correctly marks images with appropriate notations and initials.
  • Correlates clinical information and ultrasound findings to assist the Radiologist in interpreting scans / images.
  • Participates in the overall operation of the Imaging department - scheduling, filing of reports / patient records, answering phones, etc.
  • Follows appropriate sterile and clean techniques when assisting with biopsies, aspirations, and other invasive procedures.
  • Reviews images for proper positioning, technique, and patient identification to be sent to the Radiologist as a completed examination.
  • On-call, weekend and holiday coverage participation required as needed.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment after each procedure is performed.
  • Uses clear, concise, professional communication with coworkers, patients, all customers internal and external.
  • Uses AIDET in interactions with patients and family members. Utilizes white boards for patient communication.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to assist in coordination of patient care, including but not limited to patient transfer, discharge, referrals, and spiritual / psychosocial support needs.
  • Acts with a sense of urgency when performing tasks.
  • Basic unit / department maintenance such as keeping files, drawers, cabinets free from unnecessary clutter.
  • Reports on any equipment and or environmental issues for repair.
  • Abides by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.
  • Utilizes SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) when communicating with oncoming shift, physician communication and giving report to ancillary or other nursing services.
  • Speaks up to stop the line and escalates potential safety events if necessary.
  • Completes and attends monthly training assigned.
  • May float to other areas of the hospital as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Attends staff meetings; follows HIPAA guidelines; follows patient rights policy; complies with the compliance program; demonstrates knowledge of role in a disaster; demonstrates knowledge of fire and fire drill procedures; working knowledge of hospital emergency codes; always utilizes standard precautions in the clinical setting; safely manages the environment of care by demonstrating a working knowledge of the requirements of the : Life Safety program, Utilities Management program, Hazardous Materials program, Emergency Preparedness program, Safety Management program, Medical Equipment Management program, Security Management program.
  • Qualifications / Experience :

  • At least six (6) months minimum of related experience and / or training as an Ultrasound Tech in a general acute care setting.
  • Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read / comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC (computer) skills.
  • A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, place patients and families first, and collaborate with the team members who are recognized leaders within health care.
  • Education :

  • Two (2) years of experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
  • Graduate from an accredited Ultra sonographers' program or Associate degree in Health Science or equivalent education / experience.
  • Licensure / Certifications :

  • Current American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) or Registry eligible, required.
  • ARDMS requirement not required for technologists hired prior to January 1, 2024.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA), required.
  • Must acquire SPI (Sonography Principles & Instrumentation) certification within 6 months of hire.
  • AB508 Workplace Violence Prevention (4 hour) due within 30 days.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB 1 or MAB 2), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or other certification covering AB508 and SB1299.
