Job Title: Youth Specialist Tutor
Location: Memphis Office of Youth Services
Program Overview:
The Memphis Ambassadors Apprentice Program is a year-round tutoring program for 7th & 8th grade youth. This program is offered under the Memphis Office of Youth Services umbrella in each of the council districts. Our mission is to tutor middle school youth and help to raise and/or maintain their GPAs as they advance into high school.
Minimum Qualifications:
Youth Specialists will assist in the implementation and facilitation of program and tutor-related activities at designated community centers and schools within the city district.
Must have a bachelor’s degree in English or education or at least 55 college semester hours. It’s also possible for candidates to work as they pursue their education through part-time study or have at least one or two years of experience working with young people, whether voluntary or paid.
Summary of Position:
This position includes, but is not limited to, conducting small group tutoring sessions, maintaining attendance and program-related records, and assisting with service project ideas.
Candidates must have a great understanding of best practice teaching models that affect academic outcomes of youth.
Candidates must be able to work part-time during the current academic school year . During the summer, we will require full-time hours (32 – 40) from May to July. Must have reliable transportation to and from designated tutoring sites.
Program Responsibilities:
Ø Be a positive leader for students
Ø Proficient in English Language Arts
Ø Youth Specialist must exhibit excellent organization skills, create a learning environment and establish classroom management.
Ø Must be able to provide homework and classwork assistance in core subjects.
Ø Must be creative and unique with facilitating
Ø Facilitate life skill curriculum, such as boundaries, self awareness, testing strategies.
Ø Build rapport with students and families.
Ø Proficient in written and email communication.
Ø Assist in planning, marketing, and executing the social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs based on the student’s needs and/or interests and encourage students to participate in those programs
Ø Function as an advocate for students by recognizing the problems, concerns, and opinions of individuals and presenting the student’s viewpoints to the appropriate program staff
Ø Be a resource for others living in the neighborhood
Ø Engage students to meet personal goals and objectives
Ø Plan social and community service events to enrich the student experience
Ø Maintain records and other program information for evaluation purposes
Job Types: Part-time, Internship
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
