Purpose and Scope
This position has a dual reporting relationship to the Director of School Compliance and the Principal. Primary responsibility is being the bookkeeper in one school handling larger amounts of money to process the financial activity for the school to support consistent bookkeeping practices that lead to operational and fiscal compliance. Must strictly adhere by law to the Tennessee Internal School Uniform Accounting Policy Manual. Serves as a mentor to new bookkeepers in other schools.
Essential Job Functions
Minimum Qualifications
Requires High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years of direct experience serving as a bookkeeper in a Shelby County School, or equivalent for a total of 3 years.
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Plans work activities; uses time efficiently, completes bookkeeping tasks correctly and on time
- Strictly adheres to compliance and bookkeeping policies, procedures, regulations and best practices. Suggests ways to improve efficiency
- Attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills
- General knowledge of office procedures and bookkeeping
- Possess problem solving skills, good judgment and knows when to escalate issues
- Ability to compare information to standards, and prepare written and oral reports
- Treats people with respect. Communicates effectively with the public, students and staff. Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
- Demonstrated proficiency in business English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Edits own work.
- Ability to use computer and basic level of skill using Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word and database software
- Answers general questions from the public, students and staff
- Basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, averages and percent
- Keeps all financial information confidential and private
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.
Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
