What are the responsibilities and job description for the Barista (Seasonal) position at Memphis Zoological Society?
The Memphis Zoo is looking for a friendly, passionate Barista to join our small coffee shop team. The ideal candidate has a love for coffee, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. If you enjoy crafting delicious drinks, engaging with customers, and working in a warm, community-focused atmosphere, we’d love to hear from you! Previous Barista or food service experience is a plus, but not required. We're happy to train the right person!
Summary:
Barista responsibilities include educating customers on our drinks menu, making recommendations based on their preferences, up-selling special items and taking orders. A Barista has to follow specific recipes and preparation techniques for a number of menu items. To be successful in this role, you should have strong customer service skills and ability to multi-task.
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, espresso drinks, teas, and specialty drinks.
- Operate and maintain coffee-making equipment, including espresso machines and grinders.
- Prepare required food items following standard operating procedures.
- Take customer orders, process payments, and provide excellent service with a friendly attitude.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the coffee shop, including the counter, seating area, and equipment.
- Restock supplies, including coffee beans, syrups, milk, and pastries.
- Follow health and safety regulations to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assist with opening and closing duties as needed.
- Engage with customers, answer questions, and provide recommendations on drinks and menu items.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Ability to learn new skills and adapt as needed.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Previous experience as a barista or similar role.
- Knowledge of sanitation regulations.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Seasonal positions are defined as temporary work to meet an organization’s temporary needs during certain times of the year and can last up to 6 months. This position can be scheduled to work approximately up to 40 hours per week. Scheduling is at the discretion of the manager. This position is considered non-exempt under the federal and state wage and hour laws.
This position regularly requires flexible hours including weekdays, holidays, and weekends including early morning, daytime, and evening hours to provide coverage during Zoo hours of operation.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in the kitchen of food service venues. The work environment is fast-paced and involves exposure to warmer temperatures. Employees should be prepared to work in a busy, moderately loud, and dynamic setting.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
This position requires frequent standing/walking/bending/kneeling and may occasionally move or lift objects up to 30 pounds.
