Grocery and Wellness Captain Position Description

STATUS: Full Time Hourly

PAY SCALE: C

REPORTS TO: Grocery and Wellness Manager

SUPERVISES: Grocery and Wellness Team

JOB SUMMARY:

The Grocery and Wellness Captain is accountable for ensuring the grocery, wellness, bulk, frozen, refrigerated, beer and wine, and general merchandise sub-departments are fully stocked and maintained in a clean, orderly condition. This position supervises the Grocery and Wellness Team to meet objectives for sales, labor, and customer service, and our Ends statement, which is to be central to a thriving, healthy community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND INTERNAL SERVICE

  • Provide excellent customer service to our shoppers, making customers’ needs the priority.
  • Inform customers about MMFC promotions, events, and the benefits of co-op ownership.
  • Provide excellent internal customer service to all staff, maintaining an attitude of goodwill toward oneself and others. Resolve internal conflicts proactively.
  • Create a work environment that is cooperative, fun, productive, safe, and solution focused.
  • Resolve customer complaints or issues with the appropriate department manager.

LEADERSHIP

  • Model supportive and participatory leadership; promote team building within the staff.
  • Treat people with consistency and fairness; create a cooperative work environment.
  • Communicate clearly, directly, and respectfully.
  • Ensure the integrity of MMFC’s Ends Statement in decision-making and interactions.
  • Resolve interpersonal conflicts respectfully using proper channels.
  • Model all policies and procedures and uphold the Ends, vision, and values of the organization.

RECEIVING AND STOCKING

  • Lead department team in receiving, stocking, cleaning, opening and closing procedures.
  • Create and maintain daily and weekly checklists for regular tasks.
  • Ensure deliveries are checked for quality. Communicate any adjustments on invoice.
  • Maintain attractive, fully stocked, rotated, and faced sections and displays.
  • Ensure accurate and appropriate signage.
  • Ensure customers are contacted when their special order is available.
  • See that unsalable items are recorded and disposed of properly.
  • Ensure all stockers provide friendly and efficient customer service in the aisles.
  • Incorporate promotional priorities into work plans. Build promotional sales displays as assigned by Category Manager.

PURCHASING

  • Place replenishment orders to minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks and maximize sales and turnover.
  • Process all invoices for payment through Plate IQ accurately and on time.
  • Obtain credit from suppliers where applicable and coordinate returns; see that unsalable items are properly disposed of.
  • Suggest new or alternative products based on customer and staff input.
  • Communicate long-term out of stocks, pricing, signage, or promotional inaccuracies to Category Management; resolve when able.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT

  • Provide appropriate subdepartment-specific training to ensure that all team members are proficient in the skills and knowledge required for their positions.
  • Conduct timely and meaningful training check ins and performance evaluations in accordance with MMFC procedures and standards.
  • Take disciplinary action as needed following established policies.
  • Ensure department staff is informed of storewide meetings and policy changes.
  • Ensure staff are engaged in the pursuit of the department’s and MMFC’s goals.

DEPARTMENT SUPPORT/MAINTENENCE

  • Work regular Shift Captain shifts, including evening and weekend shifts. (see Shift Captain job description.)
  • Serve as backup cashier, as needed.
  • Encourage shoppers to become owners. Sign up new owners.
  • Report customer comments, complaints, and suggestions to the appropriate manager.
  • Offer samples and suggestions for purchase and use of products, as appropriate.
  • Assist with inventory counts, as assigned
  • Ensure that department areas are in clean, safe, orderly condition, meeting health department standards
  • Order department supplies within budget as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain proper storage and labeling procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced retail setting
  • Previous experience in stocking, receiving, and/or money handling preferred.
  • Knowledge of grocery and wellness preferred
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to work in close quarters with other people
  • Ability to work in cold and wet conditions
  • Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment
  • Ability to handle multiple demands
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
  • Ability to communicate respectfully, clearly, and completely
  • Calmness under pressure
  • Ability to project an outgoing, friendly personality
  • Attention to detail, accuracy
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds
  • Regular, predictable attendance

Pay: $18.00 - $26.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 – 40 per week
