Direct Reports : Compeer Program Manager, ParentVOICE Program Manager, Director of Education, Data Scientist, and Clinical Director.
About the Organization :
Founded in 1933, Mental Health America (MHA) of Central Carolinas’ mission is to provide help, offer hope and promote mental wellness in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties. MHA provides family support services to parents of children with behavioral, emotional or mental health needs; peer support for adults living with chronic mental illnesses; and mental health education and preventative training to the broader community. MHA’s programs bring together mental health consumers, parents, advocates and service providers to address systemic issues impacting mental health.
Position Overview :
The Deputy Director is a senior leader within the organization. This role supports the Executive Director in leading and overseeing the organization's day-to-day operations, supervising, driving strategic initiatives, and fostering partnerships with stakeholders. The Deputy Director will lead the organization’s efforts to promote mental health awareness and influence public policy. Additionally, the Deputy Director will serve as a thought partner and strategic advisor to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities :
1. Operational Management
a. Oversee the organization's daily operations, ensuring efficient processes and effective service delivery to clients and community members.
b. Manage budget allocation for various programs, ensuring compliance with financial policies, donor restrictions, and grant requirements.
c. Implement and monitor counseling center programming in a manner that improves mental health services and client support.
2. Advocacy Development & Public Policy Engagement
a. Create and implement strategic advocacy plans to promote mental health initiatives.
b. Represent the organization at public meetings, conferences, and with policymakers to advance mental health causes.
c. Monitor state and federal legislation affecting mental health services and advocate for policies that benefit our community.
d. Collaborate with partner organizations to influence legislation and policy changes.
3. Team Leadership
a. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages creative solutions to challenges.
b. Mentor program and operations staff members. Provide direct supervision, coaching / guidance, professional development, and support in their roles to individual direct reports (4 - 6 program managers / department leads).
c. Conduct regular team meetings to encourage collaboration and address any operational challenges.
d. Perform regular individualized coaching and performance reviews.
4. Program Development
a. Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop strategic goals and actionable plans for advocacy, programming, and education initiatives.
b. Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend adjustments to enhance community impact.
5. Community Engagement
a. Build partnerships with other mental health organizations and stakeholders.
b. Work closely with clients, community members, program and operations staff, and partners to gather feedback and identify programming gaps and needs.
The position works typical daytime hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional nights or weekends for community events and meetings. The Deputy Director will work in a hybrid environment, balancing remote work with regular in-office hours.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Business Management, Human Services, or Liberal Arts.
- Strong leadership skills with at least 10 years of nonprofit management experience.
- Knowledge of mental health advocacy and direct service delivery.
- Experience as a mental health educator, trainer / facilitator, or public speaker is ideal.
- Lived experience a plus.
