Overview
The Mental Health Association in Ulster County, Inc. is seeking a full-time (37.5 hours per week) Peer Specialist to join our Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACT Program) which provides intensive mental health treatment, rehabilitation, case management, and support services in a multi-disciplinary mobile team model, to 68 adults in Ulster County with a diagnosis of serious mental illness, and possible substance abuse problems. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Peer Specialist travels throughout the community to see the adults in various community settings including their homes to carry out rehabilitation and support functions. The Peer Specialist is in a unique position to serve as a role model who can educate recipients about self-help techniques and self-help group processes, teach effective coping skills based on personal experience, teach symptom management skills, assist in clarifying rehabilitation and recovery goals, and assist in the development of community supports and networks.
The schedule for this position is Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm.
The pay rate for this position is $25-$30 hourly depending on experience.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and integrate a written treatment plan in collaboration with clients.
- Provide services that prevent or resolve crisis in order to avoid unnecessary use of emergency rooms.
- Share their own recovery story in one to one sessions and as a group facilitator to foster mutuality and hope.
- Assist clients with finding housing resources.
- Provide 24 hour on-call service to clients on a rotating basis.
- Ensure all paperwork, documentation, QA requirements and billing needs are met.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related Human Service Field and four years of relevant experience working with adults with serious mental illness, or a CASAC
- Peer Certification (CRPA, CRPA-P, NYCPS, NYCPS-P)
- Two years of active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs or participant run organizations or similar experience required.
- Knowledge and skills to respond calmly and sensitively to recipient’s crisis and to triage emergent situations with clinical staff.
- A clean, valid NYS driver's license that will meet and maintain a satisfactory driving record consistent with agency and insurance standards.
