What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mental Health Technician position at Mental Health Centers of Western Illinois?
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a GED/High School Diploma. Work experience in mental health or human services is preferred. Applicants need to be 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Weekend availability is required.
Expectations:
A Mental Health Technician is expected to be dependable and responsible to provide constant monitoring of and required services to the clients in the Residential Program. An individual in this position must possess the ability to assess and react appropriately in situations involving a specialized population.
Duties:
1. Use keen observation skills to record factual information and events that indicate a client's progress, interaction, activities, and needs during the shift.
2. Review and comprehend daily memoranda, and participate in an informal verbal exchange of client data between shifts.
3. Monitor the client's medication, insuring that they are taken on a scheduled basis, and record any possible side effects, complaints, requests, written notations of the medication administered, and use of a visual aid board for review by other staff are also completed. The Procedure for Client’s Self-Medication in Community Housing found in Policy 1107 is strictly followed.
4. Prepare individual clients for a variety of medical tests.
5. Assist the client in minor first aid such as bandaging, cleansing, etc.
6. Provide assistance and/or verbal guidance in fulfilling the client's activities of daily living skills goals per treatment plan requirements (i.e. cooking, laundry, hygiene, diet monitoring, etc.) and complete a progress note for each service provided.
7. Understand and carry out procedures and protocol in the event of an emergency in a professional and competent manner. This includes immediately telephoning the emergency contact of a residential client who has been taken to the emergency room.
8. Complete forms in the event of a maintenance problem in the individual units, the general building/grounds, or vehicles. If conditions exist that require immediate attention, contact the appropriate personnel.
9. Interact with the individual clients to promote a trusting and caring relationship, allowing them to verbalize their concerns, symptoms, or personal needs. Document this interaction and, if necessary, notify the appropriate personnel to assess the situation.
10. Answer the telephone and record messages, observe all visitors to the building and grounds, and document this information.
11. Be familiar with the treatment plan of the individual clients and assist in tasks toward achieving their goals. At six month intervals, assist the supervisor in reviewing the plan and goals and provide input and opinions concerning the client's progress.
12. Attend monthly staffings to discuss client areas of concern and utilize the presence of personnel for guidance on challenging or frustrating situations.
13. If you are going to be absent on a scheduled workday, you must call your Manager on duty or Pager #2 at least one hour prior to the time you are to report for duty.
14. Plan and implement client activities.
15. Complete documentation according to agency guidelines.
16. Possess a working knowledge of the various programs involved with the treatment of the chronically mentally ill. Cross-train in the other programs to provide additional personnel and broaden knowledge of the mental health field.
17. Preserve confidentiality of all agency materials relating to clients, services and privileged personnel/administration information.
18. Understand and observe the policies and procedures established by the Mental Health Centers of Western Illinois.
19. Attend required annual trainings and other work-related seminars to increase overall knowledge base and improve job-related skills.
