Duties Description The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is seeking a qualified candidate for the exempt position of Assistant Director Public Information, NS. Under the general direction of the OMH Director of Communications, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with internal and external communications for the Office of Mental Health. In this capacity, the incumbent will help the communications director with the agency’s public information duties, including developing, implementing, and maintaining its public relations strategies. Specific duties to be performed include, but are not limited to, the following: • Maintain confidentiality of all confidential information and knowledge obtained in the performance of duties.• Assist and advise the Director of Communications and executive staff on media strategies and relations as appropriate.• Assist the Public Information Office’s marketing lead on managing public relations efforts as needed, including the agency’s ongoing Wellness and 988 campaigns.• Coordinate with public information’s marketing lead, digital information officer and staff videographer.• Work with the Suicide Prevention Center of New York, 988 and other entities under OMH’s purview to ensure their communications needs are met and being reviewed by the agency’s Public Information Office.• Review agency annual reports for style and accessibility, usher these reports through the agency and executive chamber approval process.• Assist in preparing talking points and remarks for the Commissioner and other public-facing staff.• Reply to media inquiries as directed by the Director of Communications.• Plan media events, write major press releases, and prepare members for interviews as directed by the Director of Communications.• In the absence of the Director of Communication, assume responsibility for the oversight of media relations activities by the agency, any major media events, and press releases, and act as a liaison with the executive staff, the Governor’s Office and other state, federal and local agencies.• Assist in the determination of materials appropriate for publication in agency publications and direct the preparation of such material.• Perform other related duties as required by the Commissioner, executive committee members, and the Director of Communication.• Supervise assigned staff.

However, in order to be successful, candidates must possess the following: a bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience in public/media relations or journalism.This is an exempt position; appointees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
