Reports to: Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

Dates: May 27, 2025 – August 29, 2025 (dates are flexible)

Nature of Work: The Mercer Area Chamber operates within a community-minded framework and strives to promote its members and the community. We support members, citizens, and the Town by marketing our assets and activities in effective and visionary ways to attract visitors and residents alike.

Position Overview: The Event and Marketing Internship operates under the direction of the Executive Director, with strategic and visionary guidance from the Mercer Area Chamber Board. This internship is intended to provide real-world experience in the field of hospitality, content and social media marketing and event planning and coordination. However, we are a diverse organization and are willing to work to create an internship that is relevant to our needs and your internship requirements.

Attendance and assistance at a multitude of area events and activities is required including: Lupine Junefest, Mercer Bird Festival, Town-Wide Rummage Sale, Mercer Open Fishing Tournament, 4th of July, Mercer Backyard BBQ, and Loon Day.

The intern will help coordinate and execute Chamber events as directed by the director. The intern will need to be present at all events. The intern will also be responsible for daily office functions such as assisting visitors, answering phones/emails and more.

The applicant must have a keen and intuitive sense of how to tell the story of our community through visual and written word, alongside knowledge of social media tools as well as some experience in photography and videography.

Essential Functions: This internship position will gain experience in the following key areas:

  • Storytelling: Through writing and imagery, social media creates a direct connection between the Chamber and the public. Being friendly and approachable, as well as focusing strategically on ways to support the Mercer Chamber brand and experience, are essential to attracting visitors. Writing: Writing effectively in different styles is essential for the annual visitor guide, websites, Facebook, etc.
  • Research: Keeping abreast of what is happening in our fast-changing world, what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used is essential. It is important to think strategically as to how best to communicate the community’s message and brand on different platforms.
  • Data Collecting: Through informal and formal avenues, connect with visitors at events and in the office to determine where they are from, why they enjoy Mercer and what they would like to see more of, etc.

Other Duties as assigned by the Executive Director or the Board of Directors.

Education and Experience: A graduating senior of High School or a college student working towards an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a closely related field (ie. Community Development, Marketing, Tourism).

  • Special Skills: Ability to effectively use Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Understanding computers and being tech savvy is necessary. Reliable, self-motivated and a desire to contribute to effectively messaging and marketing Mercer, Wisconsin.
  • Must have and retain valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Physical strength and flexibility: requirements are (but not limited to) the ability to be able to twist, kneel, push, pull, lift and carry objects that weigh up to 30 pounds and be on your feet for 8 hours during major events.

Hours and Compensation: Average week 20 hours. $12.50/hr.
