Performs as an evaluator to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the school program and school staff.  Takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies and to monitor changes.  Provides for short and long range planning.  Develops effective staffing procedures and provides sound financial management.  Initiates and participates in an effective community relations programs. Provides for an ongoing review and evaluation of the schools curriculum and programs.  Develops and monitors the school's improvement plan.  Involves staff in aligning the Kentucky Core Content.  Involves staff in monitoring and attaining NCLB goals.  Involves staff in decision making and evaluation.  Keeps all members of the school staff informed concerning school and system business, educational plans and goals.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The principal is responsible for providing the leadership that will ensure an appropriate and quality education for all students in the school to which he/she is assigned. Carries out adopted policies of the Mercer County Board of Education and directives of the Superintendent of Schools. Performs as the school’s chief executive person and serves as the leadership for an effectively operated school. Performs as an evaluator to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the school program and school staff. Takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies and to monitor changes. Provides for short and long range planning. Develops effective staffing procedures and provides sound financial management. Initiates and participates in an effective community relations program. Provides for an ongoing review and evaluation of the schools curriculum and programs. Develops and monitors the school’s improvement plan. Involves staff in aligning the Kentucky Core Content. Involves staff in monitoring and attaining NCLB goals. Involves staff in decision making and evaluation. Keeps all members of the school staff informed concerning school and system business, educational plans and goals.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as chief administrator. 
  • Participates in, supervises and coordinates the planning, development, and operation of the total school program.
  • Provides general and specific supervision over the total school program and over school assigned personnel. 
  • Delegates responsibility for various school functions but is responsible to the Superintendent and Board of Education for the results that are produced.
  • Develops and prepares an annual school budget under the revised statutes of the Commonwealth of Kentucky but subject to such changes as deemed desirable by the Mercer County Board of Education and Superintendent.
  • Makes recommendation as to the appointment and employment of all certified and classified personnel assigned to his/her school and is subject to review by the Superintendent. 
  • Performs needed personnel adjustments, assignments, subject to the approval of the Superintendent.
  • Formulates for an effective system for board review and approval, the policies, directives, and procedures to promote and improve instructional programs.
  • Provides and disseminates such information that is needed to keep the Superintendent, the Mercer County Board of Education, the school staff, and the general public informed of progress and programs.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of such reports as required by the statutes of the Commonwealth of Kentucky or the rules and regulations of the Mercer County Board of Education or as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Formulates and enforces rules of discipline. Involves students, staff, and community in the formulation and review of such rules and regulations.
  • Overseas orders, receipts, and related issues needed to operate the school program.
  • Promotes, supervises, and evaluates extra-curricular programs within the school. 
  • Provides an orientation program for new teachers and staff assigned to his/her school.
  • Attends meetings and conferences as required by the state, suggested by the Board of Education, or directed by the Superintendent.
  • Keeps abreast of the current educational practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Studies curriculum requirements and changes and insured compliance with Kentucky Common Core.
  • Develops and monitors the school’s improvement plan. 
  • Involves staff in monitoring NCLB goals and initiatives.
  • Involves staff in aligning the Kentucky Core Content.
  • Allocate appropriate time for the evaluation and improvement of the school certified staff. 
  • Gives regular status reports of the school to the Superintendent and Mercer County Board of Education.
  • Attends on a regular basis board meetings of the Mercer County Board of Education.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on committees to promote the total program of the Mercer County Schools.
  • Devotes sufficient time and energy to carry out all duties, both assigned and implied as the principal.
  • Provides information and assists support personnel in the performance of their duties.
  • Provides advice, suggestions, and assistance to school personnel to help them in the performance of their duties and to promote and maintain morale.
  • Plan and implement an effective public relations program.
  • Oversees an ongoing inventor of equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Provides for and maintains an efficient and safe system for loading and unloading students from the buses.
  • Oversees obtaining of substitute teachers when staff members are absent due to sickness or other causes.
  • Plans and implements safety programs and holds regular drills pertaining to fire, tornado, and other hazards.
  • Oversees the regular inspections of playground equipment, fire and safety equipment, and building and grounds for safety hazards or non-functioning equipment. 
  • Provides for regular inspection of buildings and grounds pertaining to cleanliness and healthful conditions.
  • Provides a system for the notification of parents concerning student discipline, health, or academic issues.
  • Performs such other duties as may be directed by the Superintendent or Board of Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years experience as a successful teacher.
  • Certification for principal.
  • Master’s Degree and Rank II.
