What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructor Martial Arts position at Mercer Island Martial Arts?
Job description
Our Vision: We use martial arts as the catalyst to motivate our students to develop the life skills they need to succeed later in life, all while also learning self-defense.
Want to be part of a fun, dynamic, collaborative team engaging and improving the lives of our students? Martial Arts is just a part of what our program is all about. We focus primarily on kids, but we also have teens and adult classes. Most martial arts schools focus specifically on the physical components of self-defense. For us, self-defense is a byproduct. It is essential, but our primary goal is getting kids to work on improving their behavior at home, in school, and elsewhere. We want to teach students life skills and see them working on time-management skills, self-control, better communication, stress management, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, grit, goal setting, listening skills, focus, and more! Do you want to be a part of something that will impact the lives of kids and their families? Do you want to be part of a team that helps kids find success today and later in life?
The Mercer Island Martial Arts team is looking for an enthusiastic, energetic person to fill a spot as an Instructor and play a crucial role in developing and changing the lives of our students. In this role, you will organize and follow class plan structures as given to you by the master or head instructor. You will dedicate time to training and learning our teaching systems and martial arts style. While not required, a martial arts background is favored. Someone with an interest or previous experience in teaching or coaching is also a plus. We will train the right candidate for this position. The position will primarily be at the school, except when attending off-site events as needed.
Our program is a personal development program that is both physical and mental. Although marital arts can be physically orientated, we are not just a recreational program. We are a black belt school, and in that vain, you will need to understand how to communicate effectively with both students and parents to help them achieve that goal both physically and mentally.
We also expect the students to learn respect and discipline in the classroom. This is achieved through an experiential learning milieu that uses reward systems and positive reinforcement models.
We have short mat chats every class, so you will need to be prepared to memorize the short speeches that will be laid out for you.
Mercer Island Martial Arts is a small and thriving school. Although your role will primarily be instruction, you will also have supplemental roles in marketing, retention, light cleaning, and new student recruitment.
This position will combine instruction, student retention, a role in new student recruitment, and relationship development with students and families.
- Will need to be able to learn and implement the instructional techniques in our unique style of martial arts
- Will need to be able to attend off-site marketing and set up tabling events. We do this usually once per month.

- Needs to have basic computer skills and learn various organizational technology apps.
- Will need to learn how to do parent-teacher conferences as part of student training.
- The candidate will work closely with the students, primarily children and their families. Along with some teens and adults
- You will be one of the first people our new students see. You must have a positive and welcoming attitude and professional presentation.
- Most workdays are between 12:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Some Saturdays may be required, but most will be Monday-Friday.
- We may occasionally need help with other duties, such as answering the phone and marketing or projects the owner determines.
- This does not mean you will be the primary instructor. You will be helping walk around and supporting the head instructor, helping students stay motivated and focused. This position does have the opportunity to grow into the head instructor for the right candidate.
- Starting pay is $25-$30 per hour with additional bonuses after the probationary period
- Medical and Retirement match programs are available after the probationary period.
