Overview

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will work with a collaborating OB/GYN physician to provide office care including: antenatal, postpartum, well women exams and full scope genealogical care. The CNM will provide medical and treatment to low risk obstetrical patients (intrapartum care), perform deliveries and instruct patients in prenatal and postnatal health practices. The CNM will utilize physical findings, laboratory test results and patient assessments to evaluate patient condition and ensure normal labor progress. The CNM will adhere to hospital policy and procedure guidelines when delivering patient care
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates in initial examination of obstetrical and gynecological patient, and is assigned responsibility for care, treatment, and delivery of patient.

Provides antenatal, postpartum, well women exams and full scope genealogical care including customary and credentialed office procedures.

Examines patient during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results, and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure that patient's progress is normal.

Discusses case with Obstetrician to assure observation of specified practices.

Instructs patient in diet and prenatal health practices.

Stays with patient during labor to reassure patient and to administer medication.

Delivers infant and performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.

When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of Obstetrician.

Visits patient during postpartum period in hospital and at home to instruct patient in care of self and infant and examine patient.

Maintains records of cases for inclusion in establishment file.

Conducts classes for groups of patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and family orientation.

May instruct in midwifery in establishment providing such training.

May direct activities of other workers.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE

Masters of Science in Nursing (MS)

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Licensed as an RN in the state of practice

Licensed and Certified with experience in obstetrics

CPR (other certifications based on unit requirements ACLS, NALS, PALS, etc)

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.

Good organizational skills.

Supervises nursing support staff as appropriate. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
