Overview

Manager, Laboratory Services

- 80 hours / 2 weeks

- Monday to Friday Day Shift Hours with 24/7 accountability

- This position will be located at the Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville, WI.

Assists director with overall operation of the laboratory to ensure quality laboratory services throughout Mercyhealth. Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required. Work alternate shifts, weekends and holidays as needed to adequately provide services. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assures compliance with current standards of accrediting and regulatory agencies and maintains a state of continuous survey readiness.
  • Assures all partners competency checks are performed in a timely manner; assures appropriate documentation of education, registry and training. Administrates continuing education program including documentation of all activities completed in MLC and providing/scheduling educational opportunities.
  • Coordinates and administrates the performance improvement process; coordinates production of new indicators, collects data, updates and posts dashboards and communicates results with partners. Coordinates, collects and reports data for the NPSG process.
  • Reviews, updates and develops general lab policies, safety policies and the Intranet Lab Manual. Administrates and assists in development of the Individualized Quality Control Program (IQCP) and Interlaboratory Correlation Program and records appropriate documentation. Assures all system laboratory policies are uploaded to Media Lab (current document control program) and assures all partners have appropriate access. Updates, orders and maintains Laboratory Copy Center Forms.
  • Investigates new technology as it becomes available, validates applicability to Mercyhealth labs, sets up demonstrations, gathers quotes and produces financial impact reports.Coordinates implementation of new technology; assures appropriate validation, training, procedures and documentation.
  • Coordinates system wide standardization of instrumentation, quality control products, linearity materials and limits, reagents and other consumable products.
  • Administrates Proficiency Testing Program; ordering appropriate products, monitoring performance, assisting with unsatisfactory result investigations.
  • Performs regular rounding on system laboratories to perform quality reviews, assist with problem resolution and assure patient, customer and partner satisfaction.
  • Directs and oversees laboratory functions in system clinic labs.
  • Serves as a clinic and physician liaison; attending quarterly meetings, coordinating training and assisting in problem resolution.
  • Administrates Critical Moments of Service (CMOS) process; performs rounding, observations and mentoring of partners.
  • Responds to Customer Comment Cards; performs investigation, completes response, contacts patient and makes procedural or partner corrections as necessary.
  • Serves on interdepartmental committees including, but not limited to: Safety, Infection Control, Materials Standardization, Hazardous Waste, Emergency Management, Infection Control, Antibiotic Stewardship, Quiet Patrol, Troponin TAT, Sepsis, and System/Lab Value Analysis Team.
  • Plans for staffing needs; provides appropriate information to support requests for new positions. Interviews, selects and hires appropriate mix of partners.
  • Completes performance evaluations on all technologists, technical specialists and supervisors.
  • Revises and reviews job descriptions as necessary; develops new descriptions as necessary.
  • Works with partners on day to day problem resolution, development of skills for career ladder and performs corrective actions and performance improvement plans as necessary.
  • Coordinates onboarding of new partners; sets up Epic/Beaker (Hospital Information/Lab Information System) access, keycard access, performs general lab orientation and basic Beaker training on all new hires.
  • Administrates monthly Lab Leadership and Partner Meetings; including scheduling, agenda, minutes and documentation in MLC.
  • Administrates scheduling of partners; coordinates development of new scheduling formats, resolves issues and annual vacation scheduling.
  • Assesses and promotes efficient utilization of systems, personnel and equipment.
  • Assists with billing work queue issues, questions and routing of tests. Reviews requests for crediting of charges and processes as appropriate.
  • Assists with budgeting; obtains quotes for capital equipment, plans for staffing needs. Reviews monthly reports, looking for ways to improve statistics and investigate discrepancies.
  • Submits check payments and Business Expense Forms to accounts payable utilizing appropriate forms and maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Performs timekeeper functions for Mercyhealth laboratories. Manages FTE and overtime to stay within budgeted FTE for system laboratories.

Level of Supervision

Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors or Associate degree in medical laboratory science.
  • Three to five years' experience in a lab leadership position.

Certification/Licensure

  • ASCP certification preferred
