Job Summary:
The Shuttle Driver Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the safe transportation of guests to and from the Emergency Shelter Program while supervising a regional team of Shuttle Drivers. This position includes overseeing vehicle maintenance, providing administrative support, and ensuring the safe operation of the fleet vehicles. In addition to transportation duties, this position offers on-site shelter logistics support during downtime or when needed by the shelter’s leadership team, assisting with tasks such as cleaning, laundry, food service, and safety checks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Shelter Support
- Assist in the implementation of daily shelter activities to ensure quality, client-focused, and trauma-informed delivery of services.
- Encourage and discuss progress toward housing with shelter guests.
- Assist with shelter set-up, food distribution, and maintenance.
- Assist with all cleaning duties and the safety of the facility, including emptying trash cans, cleaning up spills, and general groundskeeping.
- Provide safety and wellness checks.
- Assist with receiving and verifying orders from vendors, completing tally sheets.
- Post and update signs and service calendars.
- Assist in the organization of supplies and the facility’s needs.
Driving and Reporting
- Complete daily maintenance checks and safety inspections.
- Drive program vehicles in a safe and orderly manner to pre-approved locations.
- Check that all safety restraints are in working order and utilized correctly.
- Maintain the overall cleanliness of the vehicles.
- Safely load all guests in the safest way possible.
- Safely and appropriately use hydraulic wheelchair lifts.
- Plan daily routes based on several possible drop-off locations.
- Generate and submit daily route and maintenance reports.
- Meet transportation goals in a challenging and always changing atmosphere.
Management
- Coordinate closely with the Mercy House Fleet Manager regarding moving or taxiing fleet vehicles in and out of the area for maintenance services.
- Schedule drivers’ Paid Time Off, approve shift changes between drivers, and find shift coverage when no driver is available.
- Be available to cover shifts and open positions outside the normal work schedule.
- Approve official time reports and submit them to the appropriate administrative staff.
Requirements:
Experience
- Must possess a clean driving record with no limitations and be comfortable and capable of driving large vehicles (at least 24’ in length) with wide turning ratios.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle and engine maintenance is required.
- Previous paratransit experience is preferred.
- Must demonstrate working knowledge and mastery of a client-focused, trauma-informed, and non-physical de-escalation approach.
- Ability to work effectively and safely around individuals suffering from active substance abuse and/or mental illness.
General
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population; plan, organize, and prioritize duties; perform crisis intervention as needed; clearly communicate information and instructions verbally and in written form.
- Ability to maintain a positive, professional, and safe environment while on duty and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Possess a high level of tolerance and understanding for individuals who present with urgent multiple case management and health needs.
- Dependability, responsibility, and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully.
- Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet-based browsers.
- Fluency in Spanish is of significant value.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Candidates must be able to remain focused and drive safely despite constant distractions.
- A valid and up-to-date Class C Driver’s License is required.
