What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sterile Processing Technician Lead position at MercyOne?
The Team Lead is responsible for managing the operations of a shift within the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). This includes scheduling, organizing, and providing direction to meet departmental goals, while ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. The Team Lead acts as a liaison for staff and customers, providing expertise on sterilization, surgical instrument processing, and storage. This is a working Team Lead position.
Inventory Control
- Audit inventory activity and initiate appropriate adjustments in a timely manner.
- Assist in maintaining inventory to maximize space utilization.
- Demonstrate product knowledge and act as a resource for clinical staff and related departments.
Team Coordination
- Participate in the training and orientation of Sterile Processing Technicians.
- Mentor and train peers to help achieve departmental goals.
- Ensure efficient use of resources and maintain instrument and supply inventory.
- Conduct in-service training on OSHA, Joint Commission, and Fire & Safety as required.
- Coordinate scheduling to ensure department coverage.
Competency in Processing Instruments, Supplies, Equipment, and Set Trays/Case Carts
- Perform random inspections of instrument sets, case carts, etc.
- Ensure instrument sets are complete prior to sterilization and record missing items.
- Understand the basic use of surgical instrumentation and keep an accurate log of processed instruments.
- Ensure staff follows proper cleaning procedures as per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Maintain accurate supply and instrument inventory and ensure proper stock rotation (FIFO).
- Assemble no less than 35-40 instrument sets per day.
- Demonstrate complete knowledge in identifying surgical instrumentation.
- Provide training and support for Sterile Processing staff.
Competency in Maintaining an Aseptic and Safe Environment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and attractive work area.
- Adhere to departmental policies and procedures for sterilization.
- Operate and maintain sterilizers according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Review sterilization test results and record for accuracy.
- Practice good personal hygiene and comply with infection control procedures.
- Attend in-service training and comply with safety, fire safety, hazard communication, and emergency procedures.
- Ensure equipment and work areas are used and maintained safely.
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- 5 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Department with 1 year in a lead or charge role, and 2 years in instrumentation control.
- Experience with inventory control, tracking systems, purchasing, and use of computers, decontamination, and sterilization systems.
- Sterile Processing Technician Certification (CRCST).
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter Adult and Child Abuse Training within 3 months of hire.
