The Estimator I (EST-I) role is an entry-level Estimating position. The preferred experience level for an EST-I is at least 4 years of electrical experience or prior estimating expertise. Our job leveling system for growth is Estimator Level I, II, and III, which creates a clear, structured career path in estimating, each stage acknowledging earned experience, leadership, and accountability. This position reports to the Chief Estimator.
Responsibilities and Duties
ESTIMATOR I
- Generate leads through customer relationships
- Download and prepare project documents from customer request as directed
- Prepare project files in accordance with estimating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Attend scheduled site visit according to customer requirements
- Provide written and verbal response to the customer for scope related questions
- Takeoff project from customer provided documents using Trimble Accubid software
- Request quote and provide correspondence for material or subcontractors required for the project
- Prepare proposals with accurate information generated by takeoff and document review
- Correspond with the customer for proposal negotiation and feedback for cost comparison
- Adherence to and enforcement of all Merit policies and procedures
- Set priorities to achieve GC bid date
- Other duties as assigned by Chief Estimator
- Attend preconstruction meetings for specific projects
- Attend and lead project turnover with Construction Team
- Close on $1 to $3 Million of sales annually as part of an energetic estimating team generating $8 million in sales annually
- Review contract documents and verify the accuracy of contract value and scope of work

- Identify key installation requirements from the project specifications
Education and Experience
- 4 years electrical experience or prior estimating experience
- Bachelor's degree in construction management or equivalent experience
- Electrical construction background preferred
- Valid Driver License required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work 40-hour weeks and overtime as required
- Prolonged periods sitting at desk and working on a computer
- Repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers
- Ability to travel to construction jobsites in all seasons
- Occasionally required to walk, climb, crawl, or navigate ladders on project jobsites
