Position Summary

Develop and carry out a strategic plan for development of new business and provide processes for implementation. Manage the day-to-day business development loan creation functions of the credit union. Initiate contact with potential local companies or community businesses through networking, outreach visits, and phone calls. Maintain current relationships and grow business accounts through networking, presentations, phone, and site visits to potential business clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Obtain, review, analyze and underwrite the economic condition of business prospects based on financial statements, tax returns, credit history, and business plans.  Exhibit independent judgment when preparing a credit requests that is clear, concise, and focused with identified risks, valid mitigates, and precise and meaningful conclusions.  Loan structures will have clear purpose, and solid primary and secondary repayment sources without dependence on collateral liquidation.  Credit quality and risk mitigation is key.  
  • Early in the process, develop a clear understanding of the request, the borrower and guarantors’ business and role, and any potential issues or concerns.
  • Take a leadership role in obtaining required information and anticipating future needs to insure a smooth and timely process for both the member and internal staff.
  • Work effectively and productively with underwriters and the operations team, insuring clear understanding through focused and concise communication.
  • Gather and review information and documentation required to complete a comprehensive evaluation and understanding of the opportunity.  Seek clarity from the member and internal staff, as appropriate such that needed information is obtained in a timely manner.

Attain loan, deposit, and fee income goals by quickly and confidently differentiating the characteristics of a strong deal that should advance for full underwriting and a weak deal that should be denied. Develop and establish relationships with business owners in Meriwest Credit Union's target markets through effective networking and recommending the most appropriate products, services, loan programs and solutions to meet their current and future business needs.

  • Be active, accessible, visible, and responsive within the business community as a respected representative of MCU by delivering exceptional member service and product support.  
  • Be present in the local community to identify business prospects through networking, events, and referrals.
  • Partner with MCU staff in making business calls and servicing business members. 
  • Assist and educate MCU staff on business loan guidelines, practices, and procedures.
  • Continuously develop new business opportunities through cold calls, in person contact, networking and market research.
Demonstrate effective portfolio management through active and timely follow up of all required documents, reporting requirements, financial and non-financial covenants, administrative covenants, and conditions of approval; taking appropriate and timely action, as needed including those situations in default.  
  • Ensure ongoing, quality relationships by making regular site visits to the place of business, resulting in a thorough understanding of the business operations, competitive markets, its future direction, and business strategy, and serving as a trusted financial advisor for their success.
  • Assess, service, and facilitate their business and personal lending, deposit, and financial services needs; identifying cross selling opportunities for additional products and services.
  • Partner with business owners to extend Meriwest's products and services to their employees and their clients in order to expand their business and personal banking relationships.
  • Be responsive to internal and external requests, demonstrating solid and effective management of client portfolio responsibilities.

Demonstrate active problem loss prevention and detection by taking appropriate and timely action as needed.  This is evidenced by a clear understanding of all rules, regulations, federal and state laws, loan policies, guidance, and procedures; and regulatory advice and guidance to ensure compliance, and safety and soundness.  Be active in managing risk mitigation for the department, ensuring: 

  • All loans are current and not matured or past due.
  • Timely completion of annual reviews.  
  • Accurate and timely risk ratings to ensure proper reserves and risk mitigation activities.
  • On-going monitoring of loan payments, delinquencies, and overdrafts.
  • Proactive problem detection and timely resolution.  Recommended actions will result in a win-win resolution.

Ensure all records and files are complete, comprehensive, and accurate, reflecting the loans approved.  

  • Credit and documentation files are in order.
  • All documentation and administrative activities are completed in a manner to ensure proper use of funds and perfected collateral positions.
  • Verify that loan documentation is consistent with conditions approved, complete, and properly executed.
  • Work with staff to ensure proper boarding, closing, funding, and servicing activities.

Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three to five years’ experience in related position, full knowledge of business deposits, complex commercial and business loan underwriting, documentation preparation, funding, and applicable laws and regulations; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Three to five years’ experience in outside sales and relationship business development.
  • Three to five years’ experience in reviewing and understanding business and personal financial information and tax returns.
  • BA/BS degree in related field or equivalent experience or training.
  • The ability to motivate or influence inside or outside senior level personnel is a critical part of the job, requiring a significant level of influence and trust. Obtaining cooperation and agreement on important outcomes via frequent material presentations and a professional level of written communication skills are essential to the position.
  • Outside contacts are essential, as is fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals).
  • Must be a self-starter, with a strong drive to succeed and continually reach new goals.
  • Must have extensive experience in commercial real estate lending and C&I lending.
  • Must be a team player who can operate both within a group and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Make effective group and individual sales presentations.
  • Full knowledge of credit union products and services in to order cross sell business and personal financial products and services.
  • Intermediate or above level of experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

The Commercial Relationship Manager position is a Grade 14. 

  • Target Range:  $124,170.74 to $155,213.43* (additional incentives may apply)

*The target range for entry in a new position is between the minimum and midpoint of the range, depending on experience and qualifications.
