Job Summary

Performs intermediate skilled trades operating large trucks with GVWR up to 65,000 lbs., light, and medium equipment up to 35,000 lbs. of operating weight, performing a variety of tasks related to road construction and maintenance, maintaining county right of ways, drainage systems, buildings and grounds, and relative facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under limited supervision of assigned supervisor Operations Chief, Dept Director.

Essential Functions

Participates in the work of skilled trades and semiskilled workers in the construction and maintenance of county roads/streets, r/w, and drainage systems.

Repairs and maintains county roads/streets and road right of ways, including shoulders, gravel roads, driveway connections, and mailbox areas; assists in debris removal, as necessary.

Mows grass on County property and county right of ways. Cuts and removes brush and tree limbs from County right of ways, bridges, culverts, and drainage ways. Chips, trims, edges, and cleans, curbs, sidewalks, fences, and landscape islands.

Performs general landscaping duties as directed.

Operates equipment and trucks in the street and pedestrian traffic, around utilities and in other tight places requiring care and skill.

Operates and performs daily general inspection of maintenance for a variety of medium equipment, such as a backhoe, dump trucks, rubber tire loaders, skid steer loaders, right of way mowers, boom mowers, pothole-patcher and similar motorized vehicles.

Operates small equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, pressure washers, weed eaters, saws, blowers, edger, and hedgers.

Assists with seasonal roadway maintenance issues such as debris from flooding and windstorms, snow removal and ice control.

Performs position related duties as required with regular and reliable attendance.

Complies with Meriwether County policies and procedures.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and moderate experience in the operation of small, medium-sized equipment and trucks, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Job Performance

General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of vehicles and equipment used in the area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment.; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicle operation; skill in the operation of light to medium duty equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of vehicles and equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.

Ability to work frequently sitting, speaking, or hearing, using hands and arms to handle or feel, and reach, and repetitive motions. Occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

Work has requirements of standard vision, vocal communication, and hearing.

Work requires assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles, operating equipment.

Must be able to observe general surroundings and activities.

Regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions, and working in high precarious places.

Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations.

Must be able to work around loud noises, heavy equipment, construction, and heavy traffic.

Special Requirements

National Safety Council Flagger certifications with six months.

Possess a favorable background history as determined by review of local, state, and federal records, and favorable driving history (MVR).

Possess a valid driver’s license of a Class B minimum, within the state of Georgia.

May require additional safety training or certifications.
