Description
Provide instruction and support for the Health & Wellness department, while providing a safe and friendly environment for members to be led through a fitness program by knowledgeable staff. Under the direction of the Group Exercise Director, this person will be responsible for providing top quality customer service in accordance with the mission and goals of the YMCA and facilitating group exercise instruction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interpret and communicates the Mission, objectives, and programs to Members and program participants.
- Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
- Maintain certifications on annual basis or as certifications require.
- Facilitate open communication between immediate supervisor, YMCA staff, volunteers and members to create strong relationships and build ownership.
- Demonstrate through action and interaction with staff, YMCA members and the public, the Four Character Development Principles of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
- Participate and assist in additional YMCA activities, trainings or meetings when requested, to include at least a quarterly staff meeting.
- Teach group exercise classes, or any other programming as part of the Health & Wellness Department.

Qualifications
- Experience: 6 months to 1 year.
- Certifications: Required for hiring First Aid, CPR/AED, BBP, Group Fitness Instructor Certification from one or more of the following; AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, YMCA or other nationally recognized, tested, and renewal required certification. To be obtained within 90 Days of Hire.
- Other Skills/Training: First 90 days of employment complete the following Human Resources
Trainings: Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and New Employee Orientation; and within 6 months the H/W Department training - YMCA Healthy Lifestyle and Principles preferred. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (youth, seniors, physical disability, race, culture). Must gain knowledge of Health Seekers and Activate America initiative, Listen First skills, and the Y Mission.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to demonstrate exercises assigned to class format.
- Must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions
- Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds.
- Must have patience to deal with high volume of people.
- Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations.
- Creativity; ability to develop and design group fitness programs that are safe, fun and a challenge to members.
- Must have the ability to effectively keep written records (i.e. Member workout cards, incident reports).
