    Job Title: Elementary STEAM Community Resource Liaison

    Pay Program: Support Staff

    Reports to: Director of STEM, CTE, College Prep & Federal Programs
    Pay Range: CH 7 $18.45 - $20.57

    Work Year: 171 Days / 8 Hours

    SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Director of STEM and CTE Programs this position provides support to identified Elementary Schools with designated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programming or curriculum. Liaison works to match students’ problem-based learning, trying to solve authentic community problems, with community businesses and members already working on the identified problem or in in a related field or industry. Employee duties include working with established partnerships as well as expanding student learning opportunities through developing new and innovative business relationships. Logistical duties include booking kick-off events, handling field trips, coordinating student presentations before community panelists, and arranging for a wide-array of public announcements and media coverage. This role also assists the Coordinator in developing and maintains a tracking database of existing partnerships and developing data for reporting purposes and is often a first point of contact for the public and staff contacting the schools regarding STEAM programming and the employee must work professionally and cooperatively to facilitate these interactions.

    Job Responsibility Descriptions

    • Working throughout the District identified elementary STEAM schools the Liaison role works to coordinate student learning projects with community businesses and organizations that hold resources and knowledge that could facilitate activities related to the students’ stated learning objectives. Liaison works to match students’ problem-based learning, trying to solve authentic community problems, with community businesses and members already working on the identified problem or in in a related field or industry. This Liaison role acts as a primary point of contact managing a flow of two-way inquiries and requests between the community and school staff. Employee provides a level of technical expertise and general assistance regarding STEAM projects, coordinating activities that support STEAM/STEM programming, are aligned with the D51 Learning model, and provide well-rounded educational opportunities.
    A primary goal for this role is to strengthen relationships between schools and community partners by working to ensure that developed resources are not over utilized nor underutilized by providing a central point of connection and coordination. This employee will have aspects of working with established partnerships as well as holding an expectation to expand student learning opportunities through new and innovative business relationships. Cross referencing with established STEAM/STEM community partnerships, including those established through the District’s CTE partnerships, the Liaison conducts ground level community research and recruitment establishing which community partnerships that may work for successful projects and accomplishing stated goals. Duties under this responsibility include a continuous schedule of phone calls and site visits on behalf of schools inquiring as to the business/organization’s interest level and capacity to work with students.


    • Employee attends problem-based learning planning sessions with follow up to include identifying resources that are available to support the problem-based learning project. An important aspect of this role is facilitating teacher connections between elementary STEAM schools and other STEM/STEAM teachers in the District. Employee is working to facilitate collaboration and joint use of resources as appropriate and avoiding duplication of efforts.
    Communication responsibilities regarding STEAM events is also primary duty of this position. Employee communicates with staff, families, and community partners about STEAM events and opportunities such as, Science Fair, Robotics Club, Destination Imagination, Science Night and others through print and electronic media. This role also assists in coordinating communications regarding problem-based learning events as appropriate. Employee makes media connections and develops communications include advertising event schedules and details and works to garner general media exposure for Elementary level STEM/STEAM activities and the “real-world” problem based learning being done.


    • Logistical duties include booking kick-off events, field trips and producing public learning summary announcements for each school. Field trip work includes working with school secretaries to arrange for student’s field trip information, parent letters, permission slips, and transportation. Each school will have multiple events through-out the year (up to 30) and this role works to develop and maintain an effective system to manage a continuous and compliant paperwork flow. Employee will participate in problem-based learning events as on duty support staff as much as is possible. Requests to participate in events are balanced with other obligations of the position including meeting the needs of multiple projects occurring simultaneously and maintaining a steady flow of community participation.


    • Upon completion of problem-based learning projects students present their findings to a panel including staff and community partners. This employee in collaboration with teachers develop the logistical plan for these events. Responsibilities include establishing student presenters and no-presenters locations, recruiting panelists, hallway supervision, booking panelist rooms, greeting guests, panelists. Providing feedback rubrics to panelist and coordinating thank you notes post event.


    • Assists the Director of STEM and CTE Programs in developing and maintains a tracking database of existing community partners organized by the type of business or service provided. Employee regularly updates the database with ongoing D51 community partnerships including dates and in types of school projects participated. Liaison also records school site visits by partner agencies or people including building a list of potential panelists for student presentations. As STEAM/STEM programming advances there will be an expectation for the employee to produce statistical reporting and information on successes, outcomes, process hindrances, and opportunities for innovations.


    • Participating in staff meetings and/or building level in-service training programs as appropriate is an expectation and employee may have other duties assigned. Note: The actual duties of this position may vary based on the school and problem-based learning project at hand.


    EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required*;
    • Minimum of two years of experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint as well as Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms;
    • Experience working in public media, community outreach, or other volunteer coordinator role is preferred;
    • Bilingual oral and written skills, English/Spanish, are desirable;
    • Preference given for prior school district experience and/or experience with working with Elementary students.
    • Acceptable demonstration of education and/or experience is at the sole discretion of the district.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Valid Colorado driver’s license or other form of identification required;
    • Successful passing of criminal background check required at time of hire;
    • Access to and use of a reliable personal vehicle is required; Note: personal vehicle usage is eligible for and subject to District’s mileage reimbursement policies and processes;
    • District’s Small Vehicle Permit must be obtained within 60 days of hire;
    • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by supervisor.

    TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
    Legal Knowledge – Liaison must possess a working knowledge of and promote and enact federal, state, and District education policies, standards, and procedures. This position is expected to have a working knowledge understanding and abiding by legal and ethical boundaries as outlined in the:
    • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015),
    • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA, 2014),
    • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004),
    • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA, 1996),
    • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964)
    Abilities - The minimum skills and abilities required as the Elementary STEAM Liaison include:
    • Well-developed oral communication and phone etiquette skills in English; preference for Spanish oral language skills;
    • Well-developed customer service, public relations, and interpersonal relationship building skills;
    • Well-developed organizational, scheduling, report writing and record keeping skills;
    • Strong professional written-communication and personal computer/keyboarding skills;
    • Ability to encourage and facilitate parental involvement in the educational processes;
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job, especially as related to student issues;
    • Ability to advocate for students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse abilities;
    • Ability to work independently as needed with minimal direction and/or supervision;
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner;
    • Ability to be adaptable and flexible with collaborative critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities;
    • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures;
    • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds;
    • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

    MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
    • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals;
    • Operating knowledge of and experience with office software such as word processing and spreadsheets;
    • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, etc.
