What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electronic Systems Technician, Maintenance position at Mesa County Valley School District 51?
- Maintains the daily operations of District’s Life Safety systems within each building/site. Duties include performing building and room surveys; providing technical expertise related to all electronic system designs, installations, programming, and on-going maintenance. Employee is responsible for providing technical support on all electronics to ensure the system remains functional while maintaining current documentation, reports, records and maps.
- Performs regularly scheduled testing, servicing, and preventive maintenance as per state and local statutes, codes, and District policies. Employee is expected to interface all Life Safety Systems with other equipment as needed such as Entry/Exit alarms, HVAC, sprinkler systems, and elevators. In addition, the employee acts to implement cost-effective equipment modifications to improve safety and reliability.
- Assists the Supervisor and other team members in providing consultation and direction for outside contractors and vendors. This role will work on long-term solutions for existing buildings that may include planning and implementing a system replacement. Duties may include working with vendors in testing and piloting updated versions, modules or programs as requested as well as problem solving an issue. In certain instances, a system replacement may be warranted and this position will oversee these projects.
- Attends a variety of department level meetings that may include outside vendors, inspectors, or other outside agencies. Other administrative duties include assisting with equipment and parts inventories and including managing ordering/purchasing needs. In addition, there is some expectation for regular documentation, paperwork submissions and reporting especially as it may relate to any new projects and tracking budget to actual costs.

- Journeyman Electrician certification preferred
- Preference given for any of the following:
- Certification of successful completion of formalized journeyman apprenticeship program, or
- Minimum three years of recent electronics engineering industry related experience;
- Minimum one year of experience in Fire Alarm systems installation, maintenance and testing
- Criminal background check required for hire;
- Valid Colorado driver’s license required for hire;
- Must meet District vehicle insurable eligibility requirements for hire;
- Must be able to lift 35 pounds; Lift test required at time of hire.
- Minimum National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) - level 1 Fire Protection Engineering Technology/Fire Alarm Systems Certification within 6 months of hire; obtain level 2 within 2 years.
- Attend and successfully complete all professional development training as required by law or as directed by the Director of Maintenance.
- Position shares secondary emergency call–out duties with other team members which may require work outside of the normal schedule. While infrequently, employee may be required to respond to after-hours electronic emergent needs including nights and/or weekends. In some instances, calls can be handled telephonically but may also require on-site response.
- Excellent understanding of and ability to interpret and implement OSHA’s Safety & Data Sheet protocols and regulations;
- Excellent customer service and public relations oral and written communication skills with consultative abilities;
- Well-developed organizational, scheduling, report writing and record keeping skills;
- Well-developed team-building and interpersonal relationship skills required;
- Strong ability to work independently as needed with minimal direction and/or supervision;
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, schematics, and to draw diagrams, sketches and basic plans;
- Strong knowledge of electronic systems parts and equipment inventory tracking, ordering, and purchasing;
- Ability to apply basic math, bookkeeping and budgeting skills including preparing project projections;
- Ability to develop and evaluate safe processes and schedules resolving electronic systems safety issues;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner;
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible with collaborative critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities;
- Ability to use de-escalation skills to diffuse and manage stressful and fluid situations;
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures;
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, and to resolve/report unsafe conditions to Supervisor as appropriate.

- Operating knowledge of and ability to use electronic systems hardware and software installation and repair/replacement techniques;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers, peripherals, and keyboarding skills;
- Operating knowledge of and experience with software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, schematics, email, and online computing platforms including G-Suite
- Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, etc.;
- District approved uniform and equipment is required.

SUMMARY: Operating under the general supervision of the Mechanical Systems Supervisor this technician operates as a position responsible for the District’s electronic systems integrity and operational soundness. The Technician is responsible for maintaining existing systems, implementing updates and providing interfacing for a wide array of Life Safety equipment for example Fire Alarms, Security Systems, Panic Alarms, ICS (Intercom/Mass Notification) and clocks.
