- Guide and support individuals in learning and preserving the Mescalero Apache Language.
- Facilitate workshops, classes, and one-on-one sessions.
- Assess learners' progress, provide constructive feedback, and adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse learning needs and styles of participants.
- Collaborate with tribal elders, language experts, and community members to gather resources, develop materials, and organize cultural events aimed at language preservation and promotion.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with diverse age groups and adapt to different learning styles.
- Actively participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills, deepen cultural knowledge, and stay updated on best practices in language instruction and revitalization.
- Participate in all meetings and trainings, as required.
- Is a highly proficient, fluent speaker of MAL.
- Does not need to have experience teaching the MAL in a formal setting, training will be supplied.
- Understands or is willing to learn about the language-learning process.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Mescalero Apache Tribes’ history, traditions, and customs.
- Speaks/understands the Apache language.
- Sensitivity to Native American culture, traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs of our Tribal Community.
- Ability to function effectively under pressure of time and/or demands of several tasks.
- Good public relations and interpersonal relationship skills.
Qualifications, experience, and education:
- Understands or is willing to learn about the language-learning process.
- Is willing to spend 4 hours a day with apprentice speaking only the MAL.
- Is willing to commit at least 1 year to this project.
- Is willing to overcome any fears, inhibitions, or negative feelings about speaking and sharing the MAL.
- Is willing to learn and to use different techniques to pass on the MAL.
- Is willing to be audio and video recording.
- REQUIRED to possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License, (out of state applicants must receive NMDL within 90 days of hire).
- REQUIRED to adhere to The Mescalero Apache Tribe’s Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace policy.

Job Summary
The Mescalero Apache Tribe is seeking a Mentors to join our community-oriented educational team. As a Mentor, you will play a crucial role in preserving and revitalizing the rich cultural heritage of the Mescalero Apache Tribe by imparting the Apache language to members of our community. This position requires a deep understanding and appreciation of Apache language, culture, and traditions, as well as a passion for mentoring and empowering others.
