WDFW Program : Fish Program – Fish Management Division

Duty Station : La Conner, Washington – Skagit County

Embrace this role to collect catch and angler effort information for salmon, steelhead, and other fish species via interviews and drive-around effort counts in the Samish, Skagit, and Nooksack River basins. This is an opportunity to participate in sampling and field studies that collect biological data in support of fisheries management.

Responsibilities :

This position will include :

  • Creel sampling :

Perform surveys to assess angling effort, counting anglers, vehicles, and trailers at multiple, pre-determined river locations.

  • Record data into iPad application and on scale card paper form.
  • Sample all Chinook and coho salmon with electronic CWT detection devices.
  • Classify, sort, and enumerate marked (adipose fin-clipped) and unmarked salmon by CWT status.
  • Remove snouts from Chinook and Coho salmon with CWTs for fisheries modeling.
  • Sample salmon catch to obtain stock composition, age structure, fish length, and hatchery and natural-origin proportions.
  • Conduct creel interviews with anglers at river access points and monitoring boat ramps.
  • Legibly record data.
  • Enter data to electronic devices and spreadsheets.
  • Maintenance :
  • Operate and maintain all equipment including sampling equipment and vehicles.

    Working Conditions :

    Work is primarily conducted in the field under adverse weather and environmental conditions. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

    Schedule : Typically, 8- to 10-hours per day with variable days and shifts up to 12 hours.

    Travel requirements : North Puget Sound area; no overnight travel required.

    QUALIFICATIONS :

    Required Qualifications :

    Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1, or two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

    License : Valid driver’s license.

    Special Requirement : Successful completion of agency training for assigned watercraft.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience sampling adult salmonids.
  • Experience using personal computers or mobile devices for data entry.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and Word.
