Job Summary:
Perform all aspects of laundry duties (including sorting, washing, floating, folding checking all closets and hang ups). Distribute the laundry to the proper racks for the different neighborhoods. Distribute laundry to designated areas (kitchen, pool towels, spa, Bailey Street and beauty shop). You are responsible to sort, wash, dry and fold the linens. Gathering dirty laundry from all soiled linen rooms. Cleaning the folding area, washing side and sorting room. Taking care of all laundry equipment and work areas.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:

Collect and sort soiled linens. Treat stained articles with stain removing agents before or after washing as instructed. Rewashes or soaks clothing after washing, as instructed, if stain still remains. Helps load the scales and empty laundry bags of clothing to be sorted

Always washes hands thoroughly after handling dirty laundry. Wearing gloves and gown is a required procedure when sorting dirty laundry

Must read labels for proper washing instructions. Many items need special washing (cold water, no bleach, etc.) and we have to follow the directions. Some items are to be dry-cleaned. Before sending items to the dry cleaners we must check with the social worker or a family member

Responsible for checking the pockets of all items to be washed, sometimes we find hearing aids or teeth. Also check for fancy pins or belts

Must be able to operate the washers and dryers properly. Proper loading, no under loading or overloading of the machines. This is hard on the bearings of the machines

Fills the washers promptly when an established load is ready

Must remember there is also a 20 pound washer that is to be taken care of. This is used for wool items or special clothing

Must fill and empty the washers and dryers using established formulas and guidelines

Washes contaminated linens (Isolation) according to special procedure to prevent contamination and spread of disease. Wash cycle is set according to State Regulations. Isolation linens must be washed on a daily basis (this is a State requirement). We do use universal precaution for contaminated linens

Removes linens from dryers and refills dryers immediately

Folds pool towels, kitchen and beauty shop laundry first thing every morning so it can be taken to their departments at the beginning of the shift

Folds and hangs up personal clothing. Personal clothing must be folded as soon as possible and placed on the racks. Hang-up garments are to be hung immediately when removed from the dryer and are required to be on a hanger (this includes shirts, blouses, trousers, ladies slacks and dresses). Button the first button on all shirts and blouses.

Fold and stack linens, etc. according to department, residents, and unit or for shelving in linen supply area

Learn the residents’ names and area of location on the racks. Keep up with the daily changes

Inspects laundry for wear and tear. If a resident's clothing is recommended for disposal, you must notify the Environmental Services Coordinator to inform the resident or family member this is necessary

Put personal clothing aside that requires a name tag. These items will be taken to the sewing room for marking

Puts labels on clothing and works in the sewing room as assigned by the Environmental Services Coordinator

Puts linens on laundry carts, using the suggested daily linen count. These carts will be taken to the neighborhoods at the end of the day. The Laundry Assistant is responsible for pulling the carts to the different neighborhoods on weekends

Put all linens in your work area away and keep the tables clean. When leaving at the end of the day make sure the tables are clean. Do not put laundry carts in the hallway outside the laundry area; this is a life safety rule. Put in the proper storage areas

Working until the end of the shift is crucial. Keep the dryers and washers running.

Keeps the equipment and work area clean with a thorough weekly cleaning. Must dry mop and scrub the floor and tables and shelves once a week on the folding side of laundry. Must do designated cleaning as required by the Environmental Services Coordinator. Sorting room is to be cleaned daily and the dryers cleaned free from lint twice a day

Informs the Environmental Services Coordinator when the supplies are low

Informs the Environmental Services Coordinator of malfunctioning equipment

Follows instructions and directions of the Environmental Services Coordinator and strives to keep a high quality of work and improve skills

Must perform work with quality and efficiency assuring that work is completed neatly and with pride by the end of the scheduled shift

Maintains standards for cleanliness of laundry by complying with established procedure for laundry operation

Follows emergency procedures and responds rapidly and appropriately to emergencies ensuring the safety of the residents and staff

Follows proper procedures and promotes safe work practices in order to maintain a safe working environment

Works cooperatively and productively with others, including residents, families and other employees. Must be willing to work under direction and supervision

Works well with volunteers helping to keep their tables clean and getting them more work and making room for them to work

Confidentiality regarding resident information must be maintained in strict confidence, as well as other information pertaining to the business of Messiah Lifeways

It is the responsibility of all Messiah Lifeways employees to be mindful of safety when performing duties. This is to include performing tasks in a safe manner, as well as being mindful of potential safety issues when traveling throughout the campus. If any unsafe conditions are discovered, this shall be reported to the Safety and Security Manager immediately and action shall be taken to reduce the possibility of injury until a permanent solution can be applied

Additional duties and tasks as assigned by the Environmental Services Coordinator or Manager of Housekeeping/Laundry

Wipe-out plastic laundry bins daily using disinfectant wipes

Closet person, hang-up person, folders, wash person and floaters are rotated on a daily basis as assigned by the Environmental Services Coordinator. Some days you may not get rotated due to staffing.
