Messmer High School is a 9-12 grade Catholic high school that serves students and families on the northside of Milwaukee. Messmer High School currently enrolls over 500 students. 80% of our students attend college. African American students comprise 85% of the student body and over 80% of students qualify for free/reduced meals. Regardless of student background and external factors, MHS maintains high expectations for students.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The High School English Teacher will be motivated and has a desire to make a positive impact on high school students while keeping a focus on academic success and help students achieve their fullest potential. The High School English Teacher will engage positively and professionally with the high school team to create a positive culture and ensure student success.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

- Experience working with teenage students of varying abilities
- Utilize a variety of assessments to best measure students growth, mastery, and proficiency.
- Demonstrate a clear commitment to adult and adolescent development and learning, and collaboration with a growth mindset in his/her professional practice.
- Plan, prepare, and facilitate instruction for the prescribed curriculum for the subject area(s) being taught. Manage the learning process, evaluate student performance, maintain records, and plan lessons.
- Understand and apply strategies (e.g. differentiation and extension) and best practices (eg. models, think-aloud, mini-lessons, multiple drafts, reflection, effective group work) to ensure student success.
- Implement, execute, and measure academic success at the classroom level. Use data collected using formative and summative assessments to discuss and inform instruction.
- Assist with the ongoing review and improvement of processes and procedures related to the school. Follow established teaching protocols and programs to ensure consistency among classes.
- Work cooperatively and interact positively with students, parents, staff and community. Oversee classroom discipline and escalate issues to appropriate personnel, as applicable.
- High presence and availability to all students, faculty and parents.
- Participate in and attend all faculty meetings and professional development sessions
- Maintain open and consistent communication about student progress, concerts, and achievement with students, families, and the school community.
- Provide leadership in ensuring a positive school culture for adults and students.
- Use and integrate technology in classroom and project instruction.
- Proactively and effectively communicate with all school personnel, families, and colleagues in a timely manner
- Participate in the school-wide teacher coaching program; receiving feedback and actively working to continuously improve teaching practice and overall performance

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education Requirements: Bachelor in Education, with a English emphasis
- Required Certifications/Licenses: MUST hold or be eligible to obtain a DPI English Education (1300) or have a Bachelors degree and be working towards licensure
- Experience: Prefer 1-2 years of experience in education, preferably in an urban city classroom and realizing significant gains; however, not necessary
