Metal Components is a start-to- finish sheet metal and tube processing company located in the South End of Grand Rapids Michigan. With a focus on quality, we utilize our engineering, fabrication capabilities and our attention to continuous improvement to serve an array of industries such as furniture, medical and other related industries.
We are currently searching for an Engineering Intern for our Grand Rapids, MI location. The Engineering Intern works with Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Production, and Quality to assist in the support of technical activities in the manufacturing process. This position is responsible for assisting in the planning, directing, and coordinating manufacturing production processes by using the most effective methods for ensuring safety, quality, and productivity.
Hourly Wage: $18.00 to $22.00
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Works directly with operators to gain insight on current production processes to help in the completion of assigned deliverables
- Uses drawings, specifications, and bills of material to support production operations
- Collaborates with product engineering and manufacturing to develop and evaluate & improve manufacturing processes.
- Uses creativity and ingenuity in applying manufacturing engineering principles and best practices.
- Ensures full compliance with safety and quality procedures.
- Identifies bottleneck areas, implement cycle time reductions, develop process improvement opportunities, and verify and document the effect of these actions
- Conduct time and motion studies to measure work patterns and methods of production processes
- The Engineering Intern will be assigned one or more projects with deliverables that improve safety, quality, delivery, or cost. Project scope and complexity will be chosen based on individual skill and experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Experience in sheet metal manufacturing, tube laser cutting, flatbed laser cutting, and turret punch blanking, including machine programming preferred.
- Organizational/time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
- Highly self-motivated individual with creative problem solving skills.
- Experience with use of 3D and 2D CAD software preferred
- Microsoft Office applications
- Experience with use of precision measuring equipment preferred
- Focus on specific tasks to think through and attend to all critical details.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and lead personnel to complete production requirements to service the customer.
- Strong teamwork orientation; willing to work with others on project teams to solve complex problems
- Punctual and dependable; placing high priority on completing tasks in a timely manner
- Perform well in fast paced environment with sense of urgency to meet goals.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Currently enrolled at a four-year college or university in a curriculum including mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or other related technical discipline.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Working conditions are normal for an office setting within a manufacturing environment. Work involves lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds.
- Machinery environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protection, protective shoes/boots. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
- Employees must demonstrate physical ability to work in a standing or sitting position, up to 8-12 hours per day.
