Are you ready to embark on a journey of empowerment and growth? Do you have a zest for guiding young minds towards independence and self-sufficiency? Look no further! We are seeking Independent Living Support Staff to join our team in New Bern, NC!

Primary Mission :

As an Independent Living Support Staff , your main quest is to provide the ultimate support and mentorship to our youth aged 17-21. You'll be their compass as they navigate the exciting (and sometimes tricky) terrain of transitioning from the Juvenile Justice system to the grand adventure of independent living!

Major Responsibilities :

Mentorship and Guidance :

Provide mentorship and guidance to youth within the Independent Living Program, aligning with the agency's care model.

  • Foster a supportive and empowering environment for young adults to develop essential life skills and reach their full potential.

Well-being Check-ins :

Conduct regular check-ins with youth to ensure their well-being, safety, and emotional support needs are met.

Life Skills Development :

Teach and assist youth in acquiring daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and personal hygiene.

  • Support and empower youth in setting and achieving personal goals for their future.
  • Housing Unit Maintenance :

    Monitor and maintain the cleanliness, organization, and upkeep of the housing units to ensure a safe and healthy environment.

    Collaboration and Support :

    Collaborate with re-entry case managers to assist youth in obtaining employment, identification, and attending essential appointments.

    Promoting Independence :

    Encourage and facilitate the development of independence and self-sufficiency skills among youth in the program.

    Program Compliance :

    Uphold program rules and regulations, intervening when necessary to address conflicts or issues that may arise.

    Record Keeping and Reporting :

    Maintain accurate records of interactions, progress, and any incidents involving youth.

  • Seek consultation from supervisory staff, provide detailed information on significant issues affecting youth, and implement feedback received.
  • Role Modeling :

    Model appropriate moral, ethical, and professional values for youth, colleagues, and the broader community.

    Professional Development :

    Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled in-service training sessions.

  • Seize opportunities for professional growth and development to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Qualifications :

    Knowledge and Experience :

  • High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with youth, preferably in mentoring, counseling, or residential settings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the Juvenile Justice system processes and resources is advantageous.
  • Ability to provide guidance and support in developing life skills such as budgeting, job readiness, and goal setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reliable, responsible, and capable of maintaining confidentiality.
  • Skills / Working Conditions :

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record and be insurable by MHC's insurance carrier.
  • Completion of all pre-service and ongoing training, including physical restraint training, First Aid, CPR, Universal Precautions, and medication administration.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, high-stress environment.
  • Potential exposure to verbal and / or physical aggression from the client population.
  • May encounter exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Negative drug screen result required prior to employment.
  • Successful completion of post-employment physical, TB test, and ongoing physical assessments.
  • Capable of performing physical demands associated with daily operational functions, property management, and client interactions.
  • Able to provide visual and physical proximity supervision of clients.
  • Participate in recreational activities with clients, including arts, athletics, and outdoor activities.
  • Drive a 12-passenger van for client transportation and agency-related events.
