GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Operating Room (OR) Orderly is an integral member of the surgical team responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient environment in the operating room. This role supports surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals by performing essential non-clinical tasks, ensuring optimal patient care and safety.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must obtain BLS certification within one month of hire
- Demonstrates a cooperative attitude and effective communication skills when working with co-workers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Possesses the physical strength to safely move and lift equipment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensures a healthy, clean, and safe environment for patients and staff
- Handles the gathering, moving, assembly, disassembly, and cleaning of OR equipment, tables, specialty equipment, and positioning devices
- Verifies that all necessary equipment is available and in proper working condition before use
- Demonstrates expertise in the setup and functionality of specialty equipment as required
- Maintains knowledge and application of sterile technique
- Assists OR staff with patient positioning and the transfer/transport of patients into and out of the OR
- Participates in the setup and breakdown of OR suites before and after procedures
- Contributes to efficient and timely OR room turnover
- Cleans and disinfects the OR and related equipment thoroughly
- Anticipates equipment needs proactively
- Completes assigned tasks within acceptable time frames
- Maximizes the use of time and resources to efficiently fulfill job responsibilities
- Adheres strictly to hospital policies regarding hand hygiene, universal precautions, and personal protective equipment
- Uses proper body mechanics and safety devices for safe lifting and transport
- Follows emergency protocols and remains calm during critical situations
- Attends staff meetings, in-service programs, and fulfills assigned educational requirements
- Communicates all relevant information, including concerns or ideas, to the assigned nurse or appropriate authority in a timely and effective manner
- Fosters a positive and constructive work environment by cooperating with and assisting team members
- Performs other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Employees are frequently required to push and pull heavy specialty equipment and operating tables for room set up.
- The employee must be able to lift and/or carry over 50 pounds on a regular basis and be able to push and pull over 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- The employee must be able to stand and/or walk at least 7 hours a day.
