What You Will Do
- Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
- Prepares specimens received for testing in laboratory areas such as sorting, centrifuging, decapping, separating/aliquoting and archiving.
- Operates various types of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analyzers to prepare samples in specialized laboratory areas.
- Prepares and stains smears on automated stainers.
- Verifies accuracy of patient information, test orders, and specimen labeling. Performs required documentation for specimens.
- Prepares handling, packing, storage, and shipping of specimens.
- Answers telephone inquiries regarding laboratory procedures, test results and reports. Reports critical results and documents Read Back in LIS in a timely manner using correct policy and procedure.
- Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
- Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.
- Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

- Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy
- 3-5 years Laboratory
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Certified Phlebotomist Technologist National Phlebotomy Association
- Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
- Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
- Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures.
- Demonstrates effective teamwork.
- Strong attention to detail skills.
- Proficient in basic computer skills.
- Demonstrates quality customer service skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.
- There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job.
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
