What you will do
The Methodist Transplant Institute, in partnership with The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, Tennessee, is accepting applications for the medical director of transplant hepatology. As a leader in the field of organ transplantation for more than 40 years, this transplant program provides liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, living donor organ transplantation, and hepatobiliary surgery to patients with end stage organ disease in the Midsouth.
The ideal candidate for the medical director would have greater than 5 years post fellowship experience in liver transplantation.
The medical director should be a charismatic, skilled leader with a track record of supporting excellent patient outcomes, fostering program growth, and ensuring compliance with UNOS and OPTN rules and bylaws. The director should have extensive experience in the care of patients with advanced liver disease at all levels, including evaluation of pre-transplant candidates, donor selection, proper maintenance of the waitlist and long-term post-transplant care of liver transplant recipients. The director should be able to build relationships with community and internal partners.
The current transplant program boasts an active practice in deceased donor adult and pediatric liver transplantation. There is an existing foundation within the current program to build upon to re-initiate the living donor liver transplant program. The medical director would work side by side with the surgical director, quality director, and the senior administrative director of transplant to ensure high quality patient outcomes while broadening the reach of the Methodist Transplant Institute.
Participation in the training of medical students, gastroenterology fellows, and transplant hepatology fellows is expected. Opportunities to participate in clinical and translational research exist through our endowed Transplant Research Institute.
Supervision of advance practice providers is required.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
- MD/DO
- Current board certification in gastroenterology
- Current board certification in transplant hepatology
Work Experience Requirements
- Board certified with a minimum of 5 years of transplant experience
- Candidates must meet the OPTN/UNOS Certification for primary liver transplant physician and must be providing direct care for hepatology and liver transplant patients in their current position
- Proven leadership ability along with excellent team building, collaboration, as well as exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- ERCP skills would be beneficial

A Brief Overview
The Physician is responsible for working with the nursing staff and physicians to provide comprehensive medical services and ensure the safety and quality of clinical care in the physician practice and Methodist LeBonheur Hospitals. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
- Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations and assessments using best practices to diagnose and treat patients.
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
- Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
- Evaluates patient for need for and level of prescription medicines required and considers alternative techniques for patient care.
- Manages the daily operations of a specific medical program, patient care unit, or research function.
- Directs and coordinates the patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
- Participates in specified health promotion, education and/or prevention programs.
- Explains procedures and discusses test results or prescribed treatments with patients and their families as needed.
- Orders, performs, and interprets tests, and analyzes records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients’ condition.
- Maintains accurate and timely completion of all documentation within 3 days of visit or discharge.
- Coordinates work with nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, psychologists and other health care providers.
- Supports call coverage for the practice and hospitals.
- Maintains productivity at acceptable levels.
- Focuses on high patient and family satisfaction and retention.
- Develops strong partnership with fellow physicians and support staff.
