Responsibilities of a utilization review nurse:
- Reviewing medical information: Review patient medical information and insurance coverage to determine the necessity of services
- Authorizing services: Consider the appropriateness of services before authorizing them or preparing cases for physician review
- Dealing with denials and appeals: Work with patients to help them understand the limitations of their benefits
- Promoting quality of care: Promote improved quality of care and cost effective medical outcomes
- Preventing hospitalization: Prevent hospitalization when possible and appropriate
- Maintaining accurate records: Maintain accurate records of all interventions
- Identifying alternative resources: Identify appropriate alternative and non-traditional resources
