Group Fitness instructors must be high energy, motivating, and relationship-builders who will help others reach their goals through exercise while having fun. They are responsible for leading and coordinating individual or group fitness/physical training sessions for students, staff, and faculty members at Methodist University. This includes developing and organizing choreography, movement sequencing and progression, cueing participants set up, safety, execution, and more.
Group Fitness instructors report to the Director of Campus Recreation & Wellness. Group Fitness instructors will be evaluated on their performance each semester. This evaluation process consists of a self-evaluation, a peer/participant evaluation, and a supervisor evaluation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe and fun atmosphere for participants
- Create a welcoming, inclusive class environment for all fitness levels
- Demonstrate and promote knowledge of proper group fitness components (i.e. warm up, aerobic exercise, flexibility, cool down, etc.)
- Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of group fitness equipment and spaces
- Arrive to class 15 minutes early to prepare and set up
- Keep accurate class attendance records
- Timely communication with the Director about cancelled classes
- Actively market and promote group fitness classes and training to the university community
- Follow and enforce Campus Recreation policies and procedures
- Occasionally assist with special events centered around fitness/wellness
- Other duties as assigned by the Director
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- National fitness certification (ACE, ACSM, AFAA or equivalent) OR at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Available to work evenings
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
- Current certification(s) for specific class type(s)
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications
- Ability to teach a variety of Group Fitness classes
Preferred Knowledge:
- Knowledge of fitness training and current education methods/techniques in area(s) of specialty
- Knowledge of exercise principles and technology
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fitness equipment and facilities
- Knowledge of strength training and cardiovascular exercise
