Position Description: Senior Instructional Designer
Job Summary:
Methodist University is seeking to hire a senior instructional designer for its new School of Medicine in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine is a LCME candidate program, with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable, community-engaged, evidence-based, compassionate, equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice. The senior instructional designer is part of the Office of Academic Affairs and reports directly to the associate dean for curriculum. We seek an experienced, creative, forward-thinking, student-focused senior instructional designer to support faculty in developing, delivering, and evaluating learning content and assessment for our spirally integrated, clinical presentation curriculum. This position requires a deep understanding of undergraduate medical education, curriculum delivery, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team. This individual must use best-practice instructional design theories and methods to lead and manage instructional design projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with institutional goals.
This individual must also possess independent critical thinking skills to support the needs of content experts and end-users.

Key Responsibilities:
- Faculty Support for Instructional Design
- Cultivate relationships with individual faculty members and program administrators to assess instructional, learning, and course-related needs.
- Support subject content experts to design and develop effective, high-quality educational content that aligns with best practices, accreditation standards, and institutional goals.
- Support the development of interactive and multimedia instructional materials for diverse learning styles and needs.
- Assist faculty in the development and implementation of innovative teaching strategies.
- Assessment and Evaluation Execution:
- Using knowledge of Examsoft and Acuity/One45, design and implement assessment tools to measure student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Lead or support the development of examinations and quality assurance processes.
- Ensure the process and execution of examinations.
- Export and analyze data from NBME Assessment.
- Analyze assessment data to inform continuous improvement of instructional materials and teaching methods.
- Collaborate with the Center for Academic and Professional Excellence to produce confidential student progress reports.
- Educational Technology Integration:
- Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Development to provide training and support to faculty in the use of instructional technologies and best practices in medical education.
- Identify and integrate appropriate educational technologies to enhance the learning experience.
- Proactively research emerging technologies to meet evolving teaching and learning demands.
- Program Quality Assurance:
- Support the Assistant Dean for Assessment in conducting and analyzing course and teaching evaluations for continuous course and program improvement.
- Ensure all instructional materials meet high standards of quality, accuracy, and accessibility.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Medical/Health Sciences Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in instructional design, preferably in a medical or healthcare education setting.
- Strong knowledge of learner-centered instructional design principles, curriculum development, and adult learning theories.
- Proficiency in using instructional design software, learning management systems, and curriculum management systems including the ability to manage advanced features, troubleshoot complex issues, and train others in LMS use. Experience with ExamSoft, Canvas, and AcuityOne45 is desirable.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor others and oversee multiple, complex course development projects, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure projects are completed on time and within scope.
- Excellent communication skills, with a focus on building strong partnerships with faculty, content experts, and university leaders to ensure alignment of learning content with program goals.
