What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr Financial Analyst position at Metra?
Financial Affairs is headed by the Chief Financial Officer and is divided into four groups: Treasury; General Accounting; Budget and Management Analysis; and Business Process Improvement. The core mission of these groups is to provide accurate financial information so that Metra can run its business efficiently. Together these departments employ approximately 100 people.
Reporting directly to the Director, Financial Analysis, the Senior Financial Analyst will conduct complex financial and operational analyses pertaining to Metra and Purchase of Service (POS) commuter railroad operations. Key activities and responsibilities include: contribute to the budget process by updating major cost components on established financial models; contribute to the completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end reviews of operating results compared to approved plans and forecasts; collect data and perform financial and operational analyses to assist Budget division management in providing accurate, timely, and meaningful analysis to Metra departments, Senior Management, and Board of Directors; conduct technical/analytical reviews of processes, tasks, and financial issues in order to analyze their impact on Metra; read, research, and interpret complex contracts/agreements for budget process compliance; monitor financial trends, conditions and cost allocation factors; perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting. Master's Business Administration, Master's Public Administration, or Master of Science in Finance preferred.
- In addition to #1, must have four (4) years of financial analysis, reporting, or budget analysis experience.
- Knowledge of financial concepts, principles and techniques, including variance analysis, forecasting, investment analysis (such as Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate on Return (IRR), Return on Investment (ROI)).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skill in Excel, including Pivot Tables and financial modeling.
- Excellent verbal/ written communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Advanced skills in performing complex financial, statistical, and comparative analysis.
Preferences
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management (CMA) certifications preferred.
- Experience in railroad, transportation, manufacturing or related industry experience preferred.
- Experience with automated financial reporting systems, specifically Hyperion, Oracle, SAP, and/or Easytrieve preferred.
