Role Overview
The Cytotechnologist is a key member of the Cytology Laboratory team, responsible for preparing, analyzing, and diagnosing laboratory specimens while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and quality. This role involves close collaboration with medical professionals to provide vital diagnostic insights and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, process, and document laboratory specimens with precision and accuracy.
- Conduct preliminary diagnoses on cytopathology consultations and finalize negative gynecological material.
- Refer abnormal gynecological and non-gynecological specimens to pathologists for review.
- Utilize laboratory computer systems for data entry, result documentation, and patient information retrieval.
- Monitor and address quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) processes to enhance procedures and customer satisfaction.
- Participate in educational activities and maintain professional expertise through ongoing education.
- Collaborate with other medical departments, including radiology, surgery, and oncology, to optimize patient care.
- Maintain detailed records of slides screened and hours logged.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, including safety, infection control, and accreditation standards.
- Handle exposure to hazardous materials while adhering to operational safety protocols.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Required Qualifications
- ASCP certification in Cytotechnology.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Strong attention to detail and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to differentiate colors and work safely with hazardous materials, including odorous chemicals, carcinogens, and mutagens.
- Proficiency with computer systems for data entry and information retrieval.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move continuously within the hospital and between workstations.
- Prolonged standing and occasional lifting or carrying of materials up to 50 pounds.
