What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Materials Testing Lead Technician position at METRO CONSULTING ASSOCIATES LLC?
The Construction Materials Testing Lead Technician is responsible for traveling to construction project sites and working independently to perform a variety of quality assurance testing and inspections on construction materials such as soils, deep foundations, concrete, asphalt, and masonry to assure that the components of each structure are assembled in a manner consistent with plans and specifications.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Review plans and specifications of projects to gain familiarity with the projects prior to, during, and after inspections
- Perform a range of field testing and inspection services of construction materials (soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and masonry) on roads, utilities, parking lots, and various construction projects
- Perform soils testing by observing placement of fill material and performing nuclear moisture density tests, review and/or observe soil conditions in embankments, shallow footings, and drilled pier foundations
- Complete cement temperature, slump, and air content tests, make compressive strength test cylinders, and perform concrete compressive testing using the breaker
- Monitor asphalt paving operations, conduct nuclear density tests, and collect samples for laboratory testing
- Perform additional testing and inspections in accordance with the requirements of national, local and state agency standard specifications on multiple types of construction projects including reinforced concrete, structural masonry, post tensioned concrete, and other materials
- Monitor work procedures and review all data for compliance with project specifications; record and communicate any deviations from the specifications to the project supervisor and client
- Transmit inspection data to the proper location in the computer network, which includes sending data to the office from remote locations daily, and be able to acquire the data for field use when necessary
- Complete daily report of observation and accurately record test results; submit results to client field representative for review and processing
- With guidance from project team, assist with deficiency resolution
- Act as project manager on constructions sites when necessary
- Assist with business development including scope of work, estimating, and proposal preparation
- Continuously communicate with direct supervisor regarding daily activities and updates
- Operate and maintain care of all equipment including data collection instruments and company vehicles. Coordinate for maintenance when required.
- Follow security, safety, and environmental policies and procedures in carrying out work duties and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
- When necessary, lead a field crew during inspection and data gathering activities
- Provide input on potential process improvements
- Communicate and interact with the general public, city employees, contractors, various agencies, and non-city utilities
- Maintain exceptional internal and external client relations
- Achieve performance objectives and financial metrics
- All other duties as assigned Qualifications
- Associate?s degree and/or equivalent combination of education & experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant field experience required
- APNGS Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), MDOT density testing, nuclear gauge and Hazmat, OSHA, and ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician (level 2) certifications required
- International Code Council and NICET (level 3) certifications preferred
- Required to have satisfactory results on a Motor Vehicle Record check and maintain a valid driver?s license
- Able to pass federal DOT drug screening and background check
- Must be able to communicate professionally with client representatives (supervisor, foreman, project managers, engineers, etc.) at project sites
- Ability to read, understand and interpret spec books, blueprints, maps
- Able to work individually or as a team
- Knowledge of construction instruments/tools
- Ability to learn to new field technologies/ willingness to get new certifications as required
- Ability to focus on various tasks throughout the day and change focus with short notice
- Computer knowledgeable and able to quickly learn new software
- Excellent concentration and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail

Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Primarily work outdoors on construction sites
- Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold and could be required to walk for long distances on challenging terrain
- Must be willing to travel up to 80% of the time in both urban and remote areas across multiple states
- Conduct work in a safe manner
- Frequently lift or move objects up to 100 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
