Position Information
Under the direction of the Zoo Facilities Manager and/or Maintenance Lead, work alongside full time/part time department staff including Electrician, Carpenter, Plumbers and Maintenance Technicians assisting with electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, maintenance and repair to buildings, and facilities at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium; perform a variety of specialized duties for special events and zoo wide activities.
In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:
- Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
- Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
- Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
- Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
- Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.
Perform a variety of skilled trade work in the, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of Zoo facilities and a wide variety of duties related to the zoological maintenance and operations field.
Perform a variety of specialized duties for special events and activities, including Zoolights, and other seasonal events; create figurines.
Perform other duties as required
- Valid Washington drivers license with acceptable driving record required
Must be at least 18 year of age
Must have a combination of work experience equivalent to:
2 years journey level carpentry, electrical and plumbing work experience
OR
6 years related maintenance experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
HOURS:
Up to 29 hours per week.
Schedule may vary depending on need.
ENVIRONMENT
Indoor, outdoor and shop environment
Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Noise from equipment operation.
Exposure to adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Kneeling. Standing. Crawling.
Pulling, pushing, carrying and lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
Climbing ladders.
Heavy physical labor.
Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Bending at the waist.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and equipment.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
HAZARDS:
Working on ladders or scaffolding at heights and on roofs.
Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.
Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
Exposure to flying debris or nails.
