Position Summary

Assists the Landfill Operations Manager with daily operational oversight at Metro Park East Landfill. The Landfill Supervisor is responsible for daily work assignments and for tracking completion and accountability of assigned priorities. The Landfill Supervisor ensures work is completed safely and efficiently in compliance with standard operating procedures. This position will focus on managing the needs of the site and personnel, contributing to and implementing the daily priorities, as well as those about two weeks into the future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for operational activities, directly leading and supervising employees, while working alongside personnel, including temporary labor.
  • Responsible for monitoring and reacting to shift safety, cleanliness, quality, and operational expectations.
  • Leads daily huddle meetings.
  • Able to safely operate all landfill equipment and provides instruction and training for others on equipment, including all safety and emergency procedures.
  • Assists in promoting and providing all appropriate job specific training, including safety training and emergency procedures, as needed.
  • Assists Operations Manager with all workforce related needs including performance management, employee relations, time and attendance, payroll, and hiring.
  • Responsible for site maintenance including litter control, erosion control, lawn maintenance and snow removal.
  • Assists with implementing environmental farming practices to include building, planning, constructing ponds, terraces, and road crossings.
  • Assists with the preparation and monitoring of budget.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and increase efficiency.
  • Assists with managing effective placement and compaction of solid waste at the working face.
  • Ensures that all operations staff and processes comply with all applicable regulations and MWA plans.
  • Assists with managing the disposal considerations of all special waste requests, assigns disposal instructions, and provides options for disposal of special waste.
  • Assists in the identification and evaluation of new or proposed programs.
  • Responds to emergencies and/or contingency actions, directs staff, and when necessary, secures assistance with outside agencies such as hazmat, fire departments, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of the latest technological developments and provides subject matter expertise in these areas.

Travel

  • This position requires occasional travel in and around the Des Moines area to support other Metro Waste Authority facilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • 1-3 years of landfill or construction site management experience
  • 3-5 years of management experience
  • Ability to understand GPS, electronics, instruction design plans/maps
  • Landfill Operator's Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • A combination of relevant education and job-related experience may be substituted, as appropriate.
  • Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship applicators license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • This position requires Tuesday – Saturday shift with 6 a.m. start time.

  • Bachelor’s degree

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
