What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accident / Incident Investigator position at Metro?
Accident/Incident Investigators are responsible for reviewing and investigating accidents, incidents to determine their nature and cause, including crashes and workplace injuries. Position will include assisting in development of safety measures to mitigate future accident/incidents. Attention to detail and high level of critical thinking are necessary for examining scenes, video camera systems, reporting and documenting evidence, including debris and/or vehicle parts, interviewing witnesses, and other relevant individuals. This position must possess a high level of confidentiality for sensitive information and may be called upon to appear for legal matters as they pertain to incidents/accidents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Examine physical evidence such as skid marks, debris fields, and impact points to determine details of occurrence, root cause of accident and preventability based on outcome.
- Interview involved parties, victims and/or witnesses; collect all pertinent information and specific details as to the occurrence, including details prior to and directly after the event, as well as any other relevant details.
- Determine whether laws, company policies or regulations were violated that resulted in the incident/accident.
- Prepare detailed reports that include information about the accident circumstances, findings of fact, conclusions, and recommendations for preventing future similar accidents/incidents.
- Testify (as needed) as an expert witness in accident investigation.
- Review on-board video camera software and review customer complaints and other reported incidents.
- Review facility camera software to review reported incidents occurring on Metro property.
- Maintains records and reports of all accidents and incidents on METRO property and vehicles.
- Other related reports needed to conduct investigation and reports for other agencies and community partners.
- Maintain an accident database, documenting all accident-related information.
- Support Transportation and Operation staff in accident investigation when needed and manage accident scene for Metro during major accident/incidents involving Metro assets.
- Ability to work independently, off site and in the field.

Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Safety discipline, or related field of study preferred OR at least five (5) years of accident, criminal or insurance investigation experience.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Computer Skills
- Microsoft and other related software.
Certificates & Licenses
- Legal background and/or professional claims certification (AIC or ARM) preferred.
- Investigative certifications (Law Enforcement or Accident Reconstruction) preferred.
Other Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License Required, CDL class B with Passenger endorsement preferred.
- Knowledge of Ohio traffic and court procedures.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
