The Health Information Specialist I is cross-trained on all the following functions: Psych Consult, MyAvatar, Chart Assembly, Loose Filing, and Scanning. As well as chart audits, communicating via e-mail, pulling, and filing requested charts, sending, and distributing faxed information, and other general office duties occurring in the medical record department. This individual must be able to assess and prioritize needs, follow through on assignments and function well under deadline restraints while protecting the confidentiality of individuals served.
HOURS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Monday-Friday 8 am – 5 pm, Temporary Assignment Ending August 2025
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Looking up individuals in the different computer databases Metrocare Services utilizes
- Prepare the paper medical record for electronic scanning and indexing
- Scan/Upload documents into the EMR
- Perform quality checks on images for clarity, positioning, redundancy, and misfiles
- Purge and archive medical records on an as needed basis
- Provides administrative support to clinical staff as needed
- Processing of daily mail, opening, stamping, sorting, and ensuring proper distribution
- Sorting and filing of all other forms generated for the medical records
- Answering incoming phone calls
- Filing records back on the shelves daily
- Copying, faxing, and other general office duties assigned
- Accurately performs chart audits
- Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the department
- Meet designated benchmarks and/or quality measures for assigned job functions
- Follows proper procedures and processes as identified by Supervisor
- Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School/GED graduate with 0 1 years entry level experience in general office, preferably in a medical or psychiatric setting. Technical school/training may substitute for work experience.
- General knowledge of HIPAA guidelines.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Basic math skills required.
- Ability to work with reports and numbers.
- Ability to calculate moderately complex figures and amounts to accurately report activities and budgets.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
- Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to utilize Internet for resources.
- Typing 45 wpm and 10-Key entry experience.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.
- Liability insurance required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Centers liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business. Must have an acceptable driving record.
